American Dream Deferred: Popular YouTuber Announces Exit from the U.S. Citing Rising Costs and Systemic Failures

A growing number of Americans are questioning the viability of the “American Dream,” and now, one prominent voice is adding to that chorus. Oliver Teacher, a YouTuber with 2.25 million followers, has announced his decision to leave the United States after eight years, citing unsustainable costs and critical failures in healthcare, education, and infrastructure.

Teacher, who initially moved to Texas after living in Korea with his wife, detailed his reasoning in a recent YouTube video titled “I’m really giving up now,” expressing a growing disillusionment with life in the U.S. despite its global standing. “Because the United States is a powerful country, many people think there will be no problems (with the economy), but in reality, that is not the case,” he stated.

The Crushing Weight of Costs

The financial burden of homeownership emerged as a primary driver of Teacher’s decision. Living in a country house in Texas, he faces an annual property tax bill of $8,000, coupled with $4,402 in home insurance – totaling $18 million Korean won per year. He anticipates these costs will increase by 15% annually, creating an unsustainable financial strain.

Adding to the financial pressure is the increasing risk associated with natural disasters in Texas. The region’s vulnerability to tornadoes and wildfires drives up insurance premiums, and Teacher and his wife expressed gratitude simply for having insurance, given the reluctance of major companies to cover properties in the area. This highlights a broader issue of inadequate infrastructure to address the escalating climate crisis.

A Healthcare System in Crisis

Perhaps the most poignant reason for Teacher’s departure stems from a harrowing personal experience with the American healthcare system. His father-in-law was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer after repeated attempts to seek early diagnosis were dismissed by medical professionals.

“It took a long time to see his doctor, and when he finally went to see him, he told him to eat salt and rest,” Teacher’s wife recounted. “No matter how much I wanted to get a detailed examination, I couldn’t get it, and in the end, we only found out when it was terminal.”

The family’s monthly medical insurance premiums have skyrocketed from $676 in 2019 to a projected $2,600 next year – nearly $4 million Korean won – yet adequate care remains elusive. “I felt this deeply,” Teacher’s wife explained. “This is a place where if you get sick, you disappear like a consumable item.”

Declining Public Education

The deterioration of the public education system also factored into the couple’s decision. Teacher pointed to recent moves by the Trump administration to dismantle the federal Department of Education, coupled with similar policies being adopted by the Texas state government.

This has resulted in significant budget cuts, school closures, and a shortage of qualified teachers. “Many teachers have quit or been fired, so ordinary people without certifications are replacing teachers,” Teacher’s wife noted. She added that her daughter’s school has increased the number of days closed for no reason, a direct consequence of budgetary constraints.

A Difficult Decision, A Search for Stability

Teacher acknowledged the difficulty of leaving the U.S., particularly as he wishes to spend more time with his aging father. He expressed stress and uncertainty about the future, but ultimately believes leaving is necessary. “This is a problem I’ve been thinking about for two years,” he said. “I’ve made up my mind because of inflation and especially hospital problems. I think I need to end this immigration life.”

Teacher initially moved to the United States after experiencing harassment and stalking while living in Korea, seeking a safer environment for his family. However, the challenges he now faces in the U.S. have led him to reconsider his long-term plans.

As Teacher prepares to leave, his story serves as a stark reminder of the growing anxieties facing many Americans – and a sobering question mark over the future of the American Dream.
