Burgenland experienced a remarkably volatile year of weather in 2025, swinging from a surprisingly dry February to a warm, rainy March and culminating in a rare white Christmas.
A Year of Extremes: From Drought to December Snows

The Austrian state of Burgenland saw dramatic shifts in weather patterns throughout 2025, leaving residents experiencing a full spectrum of conditions.
- February was exceptionally dry, with precipitation levels 60 percent below average.
- March brought a sudden shift, with temperatures exceeding 20 degrees Celsius and double the typical rainfall.
- July was unusually cloudy and wet, a stark contrast to recent summers.
- Despite a mild overall outlook, December delivered a white Christmas to many parts of Burgenland for the first time in 13 years.
The year began with frosty conditions, characterized by widespread hoarfrost and ice, but surprisingly little snowfall. February proved exceptionally arid, registering a 60 percent deficit in precipitation. Then, in March, the weather took a sharp turn. Temperatures soared above 20 degrees Celsius, accompanied by a surge in rainfall – twice the average amount, according to meteorologist wera Gruber.
April brought sunshine and blossoming nature, but the warmth proved fleeting. “Summer came knocking at the beginning of May and then again at the end of May,” Gruber observed, indicating a brief, interrupted period of warmer weather.
First Heat, Then Rain
June saw a significant heatwave, with a high of 37.2 degrees Celsius recorded in Güssing on June 26th. This made it the third warmest and second sunniest June on record. However, the heat didn’t last. july brought a dramatic shift, becoming cloudy and wet. “It was mainly low pressure areas that resolute the weather. They moved north to northwest and always brought rain. On average, an increase of around 20 percent was left,” Gruber explained. Despite the change, temperatures remained relatively mild. “We were simply used to very hot and very dry summers.and this changeable weather gave the impression that it was rather cool. July was actually quite average in Burgenland.”
Summer in Autumn
Autumn began with a resurgence of warm weather, exceeding 30 degrees Celsius around September 20th. October and November then saw a significant cooling trend. “What we especially notice in autumn is precisely the contrast: at the end of September it was summery again, it was almost 31 degrees on September 21st and 22nd in Landeck and in October the cool air from the north, which was almost like early winter,” Gruber said.
Lots of Fog and a White Christmas
Late November was characterized by cloudy, frosty conditions, with temperatures dropping to minus seven degrees Celsius in Bad Tatzmannsdorf and even some snowfall.Advent was shrouded in fog, but December 24th held a special surprise: a white Christmas in many parts of Burgenland, the first in 13 years. Looking ahead, Gruber noted that seasonal forecasts suggest the winter of 2025/26 will likely be relatively mild, though predictions regarding precipitation levels remain uncertain. “The models that make such seasonal forecasts relatively agree on the temperature that the winter of 25/26 will be relatively mild again. They don’t agree so much on precipitation,” she stated.
