Tesla & Apple Car Keys: Potential Integration?

by Priyanka Patel

DETROIT, December 28, 2025 — Tesla owners may soon be able to unlock and start their vehicles with their Apple iPhones, as new code discovered in the automaker’s app suggests a move toward supporting native digital car keys.

A Shift in Key Technology

The discovery points to Tesla embracing a more secure and reliable key system.

What’s the difference between a Phone Key and a native digital car key? Tesla’s current Phone Key relies on a constant Bluetooth connection to your smartphone. A native digital key, however, is stored securely at the operating system level, offering greater reliability and convenience.

According to Not a Tesla App, version 4.52.0 of the Tesla mobile app contains references to “Harmony Wallet Key Cards.” This is a significant development, signaling a potential shift in how Tesla integrates with mobile devices.

China First, Then the World?

The code specifically references integration with Huawei’s HarmonyOS, suggesting the initial rollout will target Huawei Wallet users on HarmonyOS devices. HarmonyOS is popular in China, where Huawei holds a substantial share of the smartphone market. Tesla has often used China as a testing ground for new software features before expanding them globally.

While Apple Wallet and Google Wallet aren’t directly mentioned in the code, the underlying technology is similar to Apple’s existing digital car key system, introduced in 2020. Apple’s Car Key allows compatible vehicles to be unlocked, locked, and started using NFC, Bluetooth, or ultra wideband technology. These keys are stored in the Secure Enclave on the iPhone and Apple Watch, offering features like Express Mode – unlocking the car without needing Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode, even with a low battery.

A Growing Trend

This potential move by Tesla aligns with a broader industry trend. Earlier this month, Rivian announced native support for Apple Wallet and Google Wallet as part of its 2025.46 software update. In recent weeks, Porsche, Toyota, and General Motors have also indicated they are adding support for digital car keys via Apple Wallet.

  • Tesla’s app code suggests support for native digital car keys is in development.
  • The initial implementation appears focused on Huawei’s HarmonyOS in China.
  • This move aligns with a growing industry trend of adopting digital car key technology.
  • Native digital keys offer improved security and reliability compared to current Phone Key systems.
