Amy Poehler turned a first-class flight into a memorable showdown, defending her right to be herself—Bostonian accent and all—at 30,000 feet.
The comedian recounted the story on the latest episode of her Good Hang podcast, revealing a mid-air confrontation sparked by a fellow passenger’s disapproval of her language.
During the podcast, co-host Ana Gasteyer casually brought up the incident, saying:
“I remember being on a plane with you. You got into a fight with a guy.”
Gasteyer added that her daughter, Frances, now 23 years old, was also on the flight, prompting Poehler to jokingly question her own judgment:
“She was on the flight and I still got in a fight with the baby around?!”
The disagreement stemmed from Poehler’s use of colorful language, which apparently offended a passenger who felt it was inappropriate in front of a child. Gasteyer explained:
“The guy got mad that you were swearing in front of the baby.”
Poehler then detailed the encounter, describing how the passenger attempted to enforce etiquette in first class:
“It’s a long story, but what happened was a first-class guy, which we were in first class too, was like, ‘excuse me, I’m trying to — you’re being too loud in first class.’”
Poehler playfully acknowledged that her response was inevitable, stating:
“My Boston came out, let’s just say that.”
Gasteyer, clearly amused by the story, declared:
“It was the best thing I’ve ever seen.”
The incident highlights the sometimes-awkward dynamics of air travel and the varying expectations of passenger behavior. Poehler’s story suggests that even in the relatively luxurious setting of first class, a little bit of unfiltered personality can go a long way.
