Intense Winter Storm Threatens New Year’s Travel Across Eastern US, Reaching as Far as Florida

A powerful and risky winter storm is poised to disrupt travel plans for millions across the eastern two-thirds of the United states as the New Year’s holiday approaches, with frigid Arctic air extending as far south as Florida. The latest bout of extreme weather follows a week of heavy snow and strong winds that impacted the Midwest and Northeastern US, and is expected to worsen conditions already challenging travelers.
Bomb Cyclone and Lake-Effect Snow Fuel Widespread Disruptions
The current weather system began with a bomb cyclone – a rapidly intensifying storm – and its trailing Arctic airmass, triggering heavy lake-effect snow and subfreezing temperatures across the Eastern US.According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a “multi-day heavy lake effect snow event is expected downwind of Lakes Erie and Ontario through New Year’s Day.” The Arctic front is also bringing increasing, gusty winds to the Northeast, with overnight low temperatures expected to plummet.
New York state Braces for Whiteout Conditions
Officials in western and central New York are urging residents to “avoid all needless travel” on Tuesday, citing forecast “whiteout conditions” from lake-effect snow and strong winds, notably in the Syracuse metro area. Reports indicate 70 mph winds have already been recorded in Buffalo and are expected to persist. An intense band of snow is moving eastward parallel to Lake Erie, creating near-whiteout conditions and hazardous travel.

Travel Chaos Escalates
The storm is already taking a important toll on air travel. As of monday night, nearly 9,000 flights into or out of the U.S. were delayed, and more than 1,500 were canceled, according to flight tracking site FlightAware. .
Expanding Cold and Snow Across the Nation
While a mix of rain, sleet, and freezing rain across the Northeast and New England was diminishing Monday afternoon as the Arctic cold front moved through, the NWS warned of “very cold northwesterly winds wrapping around the exiting cyclone.” These winds are combining with an Alberta clipper – a fast-moving low-pressure system – to bring additional heavy lake-effect snowfall downwind of Lakes Erie and Ontario. An additional 1-2 feet of snow is anticipated through Wednesday in the heaviest snow bands.
The NWS also noted that subfreezing overnight low temperatures will extend as far south as the Gulf Coast, prompting the issuance of Freeze Warnings, Watches, and Cold Weather advisories. The remainder of the Eastern US can expect strong wind gusts and daytime high temperatures 20-25 degrees colder than recent temperatures.

Western US and Plains Also Affected
The impact of the storm isn’t limited to the East. The weather agency reports that impactful accumulating snowfall and localized blizzard conditions will persist over southeastern New Mexico and southwest Texas into the late evening hours. However,tranquil conditions are expected to prevail across much of that region on Tuesday. A rapid warm-up is forecast for the Northern and Central Plains beginning tonight, as the Alberta clipper spreads mild air from the Rockies. This warmth will be short-lived, however, as a subsequent cold front will plunge temperatures across the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest on Wednesday.
The NWS concluded that “2025 ends & 2026 begins on a wintry note for portions of the Great Lakes & Northeast as lake-effect snow & scattered snow showers are forecast to continue for a few more days,” with increasing confidence in snow squalls causing bursts of snow and gusty winds on New Year’s Eve.
