The drills come amid heightened tensions in the Taiwan Strait,following the United States’ progress in approving the largest-ever arms package to the island enclave-valued at over 9.4 billion euros-and a downturn in diplomatic relations between China and Japan.The shift in relations with Japan stems from statements made by Japan’s ultraconservative Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, suggesting potential military intervention if China were to attack Taiwan.
Asked about the exercises on monday at his Mar-a-Lago residence, U.S. President Donald Trump stated he has a “very good relationship with President Xi [Jinping]” and that the Chinese exercises “do not concern” him. “They’ve been doing naval maneuvers in that area for 20 years,” he declared.
Chinese Foreign minister Wang Yi asserted on Tuesday that it is “natural” for China to express its “firm opposition” and adopt “strong countermeasures” against the “relentless provocations of Taiwan’s independence forces and the massive arms sales from the United states,” according to the state-run Xinhua news agency.
The PLA has deployed destroyers, bombers, and other naval and air units to conduct simulated operations from the sea, air defense operations, and anti-submarine warfare exercises. the stated goal is to test air-sea coordination for “integrated containment and control.” This morning also included practice attacks against maritime and air targets to the north and south, as well as artillery exercises and long-range missile launches from mainland China toward Taiwan.
The exercises are directed by the PLA’s Eastern Theater Command, one of the five major commands of the Chinese Armed Forces. Its primary function is to oversee military operations in the region, including those related to Taiwan. The impact of these exercises extends beyond military considerations. According to reports, its airspace serves as a key corridor connecting China with markets in East and southeast Asia. The maneuvers are directly impacting that traffic: 11 of Taipei’s 14 air routes have been affected, impacting more then 100,000 passengers and leaving only one commercial corridor operational, heading towards Japan.
In a briefing, analysts at the Eurasia group stated that the intensity of the military exercises sends a clear signal of “determination to deter U.S. and other external support for Taiwan.” The consultancy adds that the official reference to “deterrence beyond the first island chain” should be read in parallel with the recent U.S. National Security Strategy, “which prioritizes military superiority to prevent conflict around Taiwan.” Despite this, the group considers it “unlikely” that the exercises will disrupt the current truce between Washington and Beijing and rules out a major crisis or drastic measures.
