Dengue Fever Cases Surge in Pasuruan City, Linked to Climate Change

A dramatic increase in dengue fever cases has been reported in Pasuruan City, Indonesia, with a 100% rise in infections projected for 2025 compared to the previous year. Health officials attribute the surge to the escalating effects of climate change, creating ideal breeding conditions for disease-carrying mosquitoes.
According to data released Tuesday, December 30, 2024, the Pasuruan City Health Office anticipates 492 cases of dengue fever throughout 2025. This represents a significant jump from the 210 cases recorded in 2024. Despite the increase, officials confirmed that no fatalities have been reported, and all patients have received adequate medical care.
Climate Change Fuels Dengue Increase
The primary driver behind the escalating cases is a changing climate. A senior official stated, “Global climate change which accelerates the life cycle of mosquitoes plus human mobility spreads the virus.” Increased rainfall and consistently warm and humid weather are creating numerous stagnant water sources – the perfect environment for Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes to breed and thrive.
The acceleration of the mosquito life cycle, coupled with increased human movement, is exacerbating the spread of the virus. This is particularly concerning as the rainy season and potential flooding continue to pose a risk to Pasuruan City.
Beyond Climate: Sanitation and Community Behavior
While climate change is a major factor, health officials emphasize that other contributing elements are at play. Poor sanitation, high population density, and inadequate community behavior regarding mosquito control are all contributing to the problem. Specifically, a lack of consistent efforts to drain and cover water reservoirs, and improper disposal of potential breeding grounds like used goods, are fueling the outbreak.
To combat the spread, authorities are urging residents to actively participate in mosquito nest eradication efforts. This includes the consistent application of the “3 M” principles: draining water reservoirs, closing water reservoirs, and securing/using used goods that could collect water.
Prevention Measures and Ongoing Efforts
In addition to the 3 M principles, officials recommend several preventative measures. These include the strategic application of larvicide in hard-to-reach water sources, the consistent use of mosquito repellent, and wearing protective clothing such as long sleeves and trousers. Pruning plants that can collect rainwater and serve as breeding grounds is also advised.
“Eradicating mosquito nests must continue to be carried out jointly and sustainably,” a health official emphasized. The ongoing efforts aim to suppress the spread of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito and protect the community from this increasingly prevalent threat.
