Hogmanay’s Second Chance: Fireworks and Festivities Return to Edinburgh

After a weather-related cancellation last year, Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations are back on-and a little more budget-friendly.

Q: What can attendees expect at this year’s Edinburgh Hogmanay?

A: A six-minute fireworks show over Edinburgh Castle, a scottish-themed “teaser” display, live music from Wet Leg and othre artists, and a silent disco-all while enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of the city’s famous street party.

The 2023 event was scuttled by inclement weather for the third time as 2003, leaving 45,000 people scrambling for alternative New Year’s plans. Will Evans, director of Titanium Fireworks, explained that this year’s show will be a six-minute spectacle involving around 10,000 fireworks, set to a specially composed soundtrack.

“It’s a really positive vibe to start the evening with,” Evans said of the 9:00 PM “teaser” display, which will be a tribute to Scotland.

Music lovers have options beyond the main fireworks. Indie rock sensations wet Leg will top the bill at the Concert in the Gardens, supported by Scottish acts Hamish Hawk and Lucia & The Best Boys. For those seeking a different groove, the Street Party mega Silent Disco offers three distinct music genres to choose from.

Al Thomson, co-director of Unique Assembly, the company producing Edinburgh Hogmanay, expressed confidence despite a possibly blustery forecast. “Things are looking great. Looks like it might be a little bit blustery but we’re confident everything will go ahead as planned,” he stated.

A temporary airspace restriction will be in place over Edinburgh city centre from 6:00 PM on Hogmanay until 2:00 AM on new Year’s Day. This includes a ban on drones within one nautical mile of Edinburgh Castle, flying below 2,000 feet above sea level.

The airspace restriction is a safety measure to ensure the smooth execution of the fireworks display and prevent interference from unmanned aircraft. Partygoers are encouraged to plan accordingly and be aware of the regulations.
