A revolutionary new diagnostic tool utilizing artificial intelligence and 3D scanning technology is poised to reshape the hair loss treatment landscape. Developed by Afs, the “AFS 3D” system promises immediate, accurate assessments of scalp and hair health, addressing a growing concern among individuals increasingly anxious about hair loss.
As more people turn to online communities to self-diagnose potential hair loss by sharing photos of their scalps, the need for accessible and reliable diagnostic solutions has become paramount. Recognizing this trend, Afs CEO Kim Tae-hee spearheaded the development of a technology targeting both domestic and international markets.
AFS 3D: The Technology Behind the Diagnosis
AFS 3D is a precise diagnosis solution for skin, scalp, and hair loss that combines three-dimensional scanning with AI analysis technology. The company claims to have developed the world’s first 3D-based hair loss diagnosis technology, capable of analyzing key indicators – including hair follicle number, density, and thickness – in approximately one minute.
The system’s effectiveness stems from its ability to create detailed 3D data visualization materials, enhancing diagnostic reliability and providing patients with a clear understanding of their condition. This visual component is proving popular with both clinicians and patients.
CES Recognition and Global Expansion
The innovative technology has already garnered significant recognition, receiving an innovation award in the AI category at CES 2025. This accolade has fueled the company’s expansion, with AFS 3D currently being exported to seven countries worldwide.
According to a company release, AFS is currently deployed in approximately 40 hospitals across Korea, providing comprehensive diagnostic solutions rather than simply selling equipment. This holistic approach includes ongoing support and integration with existing clinical workflows.
From Pharmaceutical Sales to AI Diagnostics
CEO Kim’s journey into the hair loss industry began in 2013 with a role in pharmaceutical and medical device sales at ‘Inojin.’ In 2015, she founded MD Cell, a company focused on producing cosmetics and medical devices for hospitals, laying the groundwork for the creation of AFS in 2018.
“The hair loss industry is growing steadily, but hospitals and clinics lack proper equipment, so many diagnoses rely on subjective judgment,” a senior official stated. “I founded Aps with the belief that accurate diagnosis is essential for successful hair loss treatment.”
A Foundation Built on Innovation and Data
Afs currently holds more than 12 patents and boasts its own proprietary software and database. The versatility of the AFS 3D system – applicable in medical, beauty, and clinical settings – is considered a key advantage.
The company’s unique research and development structure, which includes a medical professional serving as co-CEO and the operation of a dedicated hospital for equipment development and clinical trials, underscores its commitment to data-driven innovation.
Looking ahead, Afs plans to aggressively expand into European and American markets. “We will build a 3D skin and hair big data platform and develop an integrated control system for patients and clinics,” CEO Kim explained. “The goal is to establish Aps’ technology as an international standard diagnostic protocol.” The company also intends to broaden its services to encompass integrated skin and hair loss prevention and management.
