Philly Mummers Parade Embraces Inclusion, Welcomes New Performers to Center Stage

A historic shift unfolded at this year’s Mummers Parade as beloved local performers like Philly Elmo took to the stage in front of City Hall for the first time, broadcasting the vibrant tradition to an international audience of 95 countries. This year’s parade signals a growing commitment to diversity and inclusion within the longstanding Philadelphia event.
The parade, traditionally held on 2nd Street – affectionately known as “Two Street” – has seen Philly Elmo participate in previous celebrations, but always within the confines of the street parties.This year marked a significant elevation in visibility and recognition. “Since 2012, we’ve just been like popping up to the Mummers and trying to get in where we fit in … but to actually be involved and being welcome to the club is just truly amazing and I’m so grateful,” said the founder of PME, the performance group behind Philly Elmo.
Expanding Depiction in a Philadelphia Tradition
The increased inclusivity extends beyond individual performers.The parade also welcomed the participation of Danza Tonantzin, a Mexican dance group, highlighting a broader effort to represent the diverse communities within Philadelphia. Though, this celebration of inclusion is underscored by the challenges faced by these same communities. The director of Danza Tonantzin expressed both joy and emotional weight, acknowledging the pressures experienced by Mexican communities across the United States.
In April,the planned 2025 Carnaval de Puebla in Philadelphia was canceled due to concerns over potential ICE operations,depriving the dance group of a crucial platform to perform for tens of thousands of attendees. “It’s very important for us to send a message to our community that there is inclusion, we are part of this big celebration,” explained a committee member of carnaval de Puebla, speaking through an interpreter.
A South Philly Partnership and a Welcoming Spirit
the integration of new groups like danza Tonantzin is being hailed as a natural progression for the Mummers Parade. Golden Sunrise, a South Philadelphia-based Mummers club, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership. “We are thrilled to have them and them as well. being south Philly-based, it’s a partnership that just seems extremely natural,” said the club’s first-ever female president.
Golden Sunrise embodies the evolving spirit of the parade. “We’re also very proud to be a club that is known for diversity, ‘Hey, can we join?’ And we say, ‘Absolutely.’ The Mummers Parade as a whole is becoming more and more inclusive, and we are glad to be able to be on the forefront of that.” This commitment to openness suggests a future where the Mummers Parade continues to reflect the rich tapestry of Philadelphia’s communities, ensuring its relevance for generations to come.
