Italian duo Coma_Cose, who captivated audiences including a performance on the Sanremo stage, have called it quits-both as a couple and as a musical act. Fausto Zanardelli, performing now as Fausto_Lama, is releasing his single “A tanto cose” and has opened up to Corriere della Sera about the split with Francesca Mesiano and the future of their collaboration.

Fausto revealed the new song is about his ex-partner, describing her as “a girl who sparkles but who went to school with kicks in the heart.” He confirmed the personal connection, stating, “Of course it’s her, I feel like a singer-songwriter and therefore I talk about my experience. Leaving that topic unsolved would have been a defeat as an author.” The decision to end Coma_Cose stemmed from creative stagnation. “We said that ‘Vita fusa,’ released after Sanremo 2025, would be the last album together. The most importent thing was to protect the couple, shut out the world and say enough to the artistic project. Then we realized that music was what kept us together and that the feeling had already faded.”

«There was no longer serenity between us»

Fausto was candid about the challenges of blending romance and artistry: «mixing love and music is very risky. At a certain point they merge, one becomes the simulacrum of the other and you no longer know what you are in love with: a song,a projection.” Following the separation, two planned arena shows were cancelled. “Those two concerts were decided as the closing party of the project when there was still serenity between us. Then the energy and desire to build a story disappeared: we removed ourselves from social media, there was no longer any participation.”

A previous crisis surfaced after Sanremo 2021, addressed two years later in the song “L’addio,” but a wedding had initially appeared to resolve the issues. However, Fausto explained, “things had become too mixed up. If you have problems at work, you end up still talking about it at home in the evening, you lose clarity, you never relax, a tension is created that sends you into burnout. You no longer understand who you are: you, you in the couple, you compared to what people see.It was a beautiful cage.”

Despite the breakup, “friendship and respect” remain between the two artists, but a Coma_Cose reunion isn’t currently on the horizon. “They exist with me and Francesca. Without one it would be karaoke. We don’t rule out returning one day, after a journey in which we will feel like we have reclaimed our people, both musical and social: we are proud of what we have done.” Fausto also hinted at a power imbalance within the duo, adding, «In a journey between two, you shape each other and put your personal profile aside. The cynicism and irony that are my signature were left behind. People saw the leader Francesca and said “but what does he do?”. I had taken steps backwards to the point that I felt like the ghost writer of a couple.”
