Fortunately, hospital staff confirmed that none of the patients were in serious condition and all were released with instructions for home therapy.

Investigation Launched into Potential Salmonella Outbreak

Local authorities have initiated a thorough investigation to determine the source of the outbreak. Reports will be forwarded to the Carabinieri of the Sulmona company, responsible for the area, and the food hygiene service of ASL 1 in the coming hours. The ASL 1 team will focus on tracing the supply chain of all food items consumed during the New Year’s Eve dinner, aiming to pinpoint the cause of the illness and assign any necessary responsibility.

Initial assessments point towards incorrect food storage as the most likely culprit. “Salmonella is a very common bacterium,” explained a senior official from the local health company, led by manager Paolo Costanzi. “In the presence of poorly preserved products, especially if exposed to inappropriate temperatures, the risk of contamination increases significantly.”

Further, more detailed analyses are planned to definitively identify the specific pathogen responsible for the outbreak. The investigation will meticulously reconstruct the consumption patterns of all foods served during the dinner.

Chicken Suspected as Potential Source

According to preliminary reports from the affected group, the illness may be linked to the consumption of chicken. Poultry is known to be particularly susceptible to bacterial contamination if not stored at appropriate temperatures. While the incident thankfully did not result in severe health consequences, it serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with improper food handling practices.

This recent case echoes a similar incident from last August, when eight people in Valle Peligna required hospitalization following a lunch with friends, highlighting a recurring issue within the region.

Proper refrigeration, thorough cooking, and careful handling of raw ingredients are essential steps in preventing foodborne illnesses.
