Salmonella Contamination Prompts Recall of Dog Biscuits in Seven States

A nationwide recall has been issued for certain dog biscuits due to potential salmonella contamination, raising concerns for both pet and human health. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the voluntary recall, initiated by Consumers Supply Distributing LLC on December 24, impacting products sold in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Texas, Montana, and Nebraska.

Recall Details and Affected Products

The recall encompasses two specific products: 4-pound bags of Country Vet Biscuits – Original Meaty Flavor, and 4-pound bags of Heartland Harvest Dog Biscuits – Meaty Flavor with Chicken. According to a company release, the issue was discovered through routine FDA sampling, which detected the presence of the bacteria in finished products. Production and distribution of the affected lot have been immediately halted while the FDA and the company investigate the source of the contamination.

Consumers can identify the recalled products using the following information:

  • Country Vet Biscuits – Original Meaty Flavor
    • UPC: 899623000463
    • Lot code: 40906513
    • Size: 4-pound bag

  • Heartland Harvest Dog Biscuits – Meaty Flavor with Chicken

    • Lot code: 40906513
    • Size: 4-pound bag

The lot number and expiration date are printed on the front of the Country Vet Biscuits packaging, while the Heartland Harvest Dog Biscuits display this information on the back of the bag.

Risks to Pets and Humans

Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause illness in both animals and people. Pets consuming contaminated food may exhibit symptoms such as lethargy, diarrhea – potentially bloody – fever, and vomiting. Some animals may only display decreased appetite, fever, or abdominal pain. Critically, even pets showing no symptoms can still carry and spread the bacteria to other animals and humans.

Human infection with salmonella can manifest as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), abdominal cramping, and fever. In rare instances, more severe complications, including infections, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms, can occur. A senior official stated that anyone experiencing these symptoms after handling the recalled products should seek medical attention.

What Consumers Should Do

The FDA advises consumers who have purchased the recalled dog biscuits to immediately stop using them and return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund. Questions regarding the recall can be directed to Consumers Supply Distributing at (712) 202-5609, Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. CST.

As of today, December 26, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall. This proactive measure underscores the importance of ongoing monitoring and swift action to protect both animal and public health.
