Mbappe Injury Clouds Real Madrid’s Title Defense, Vinicius Jr. Faces Fan Scrutiny
Real Madrid will be without star forward Kylian Mbappe for Sunday’s LaLiga match against Real Betis due to a left knee sprain, but the club is hopeful he will recover in time for next week’s Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Atletico Madrid.
A club representative confirmed the injury on Saturday, adding that Mbappe is “pushing” to be available for the Super Cup clash. The 27-year-old France captain recently equaled Cristiano Ronaldo’s club record of 59 goals in a calendar year, achieving the feat in a 2-0 LaLiga victory over Sevilla on December 20.
“We’ll definitely miss Kylian,” the representative stated. “We have to have a lot of faith in those who are going to play tomorrow.” The club is prioritizing a cautious approach to his recovery. “Now we’ll see. We have to wait and see how things develop, and we’ll do everything we can to get him back as soon as possible. We’re going to be pushing the deadlines, it’s very much a matter of feelings. When is as soon as possible? That’s the question. I don’t know. The Super Cup? We hope.”
Title Race Heats Up Amidst Madrid’s Slump
The injury comes at a critical juncture for Real Madrid, who have seen their once-comfortable lead in LaLiga diminish in recent weeks. After holding a five-point advantage at the top of the table, a downturn in form beginning in November has allowed defending champions Barcelona to close the gap. Three consecutive league draws were followed by a surprising home loss to Celta Vigo in December, giving Barcelona a four-point lead in the title race.
This dip in performance has coincided with a concerning drought for another key attacker, Vinicius Jr. The 25-year-old Brazilian winger, who netted 22 goals across all competitions last season, has managed only five goals this season and has not scored since October.
Fan Reaction to Vinicius Jr.’s Form
The struggles of Vinicius Jr. have not gone unnoticed by the club’s supporters. Following their recent match against Sevilla at the Bernabeu, a section of fans reportedly booed the Brazilian forward. When asked about the incident, a club representative said, “Vini looks fine to me, cheerful and smiling. The break has been good for all of us to recharge our batteries.”
The representative emphasized the importance of a positive atmosphere, stating, “Tomorrow, we are the ones who have to give in order to receive, to spread that enthusiasm and rhythm that we need. If that flows in both directions, we will enjoy ourselves.”
