A violent explosion outside a hotel in Havana, Cuba, killed about 30 people and injured more than 60 people hospitalized, shaking one of the most prestigious hotels in Cuba.
A gas tanker parked outside the Saratoga Hotel in Old Havana, Cuba, exploded, killing about 30 people and injuring another 60, as well as much destruction. The burning of the tanker resulted in an explosion that destroyed several floors in the building. The historic hotel was due to reopen after the Corona plague in three days.
The hotel was mostly destroyed and much of its exterior wall collapsed. Residents told CBS News that they thought the quake exploded. Eyewitnesses said they saw black smoke transformations and clouds of dust rising into the sky following the blast.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canal visited the damage site, which is located in front of the government’s old congress building. The president said: “It was not a bomb or an attack, it was an unfortunate accident.” The difficult incident comes when tourism in the country is trying to re-grow after two difficult years following the corona plague. The 19th-century building is synonymous with celebrities who come to the place, since the thaw of relations between Havana and Washington during former President Barack Obama.
