A Lima bus driver was fatally shot Wednesday night, and the alleged shooter was then killed by a plainclothes police officer-a dramatic escalation of violence in the Comas district.

A public transport driver was shot and killed Wednesday night on the fifth block of Belaúnde oeste Avenue in the Lima district of Comas after an alleged sicario, traveling as a passenger, opened fire inside the vehicle. The incident highlights the growing concerns over public safety and the risks faced by transport workers in the region.

Police Officer Fatally Shoots Suspect After Driver’s Murder

The swift response of an off-duty officer prevented a potential escape and led to the death of the alleged gunman.

Witnesses reported that the attacker boarded the van as a regular passenger and promptly shot the driver upon finding a seat. After the shooting, the suspect attempted to flee down a nearby street, but was pursued by a police officer in civilian clothes. An armed confrontation ensued, resulting in the suspect’s death.

Neighbors in the area indicated the attacker likely had an accomplice waiting on a motorcycle, which was abandoned during the escape attempt. This suggests a coordinated attack, raising questions about the extent of criminal networks operating in comas.

“He Deserves All the Recognition”

the commanding general of the National Police of Peru (PNP),Oscar Arriola, arrived at the scene and stated the deceased suspect was linked to extortion crimes. “An insane criminal who, behind the extortion, has taken the life of a transporter,” Arriola said. “Moments in which he has been appreciated by a police officer who has drawn his firearm and, in accordance with the Constitution and the laws, has shot him down.”

Arriola strongly praised the officer’s actions. “This is the action that we, in my capacity as general commander, must recognise and congratulate from every point of view to this police officer,” he noted. “We must encourage him, reward him and recognize him. We need a thousand, a thousand of these actions to stop this wave of violence. This is how you act, with energy, with courage, showing the vocation to serve. This is a person who absolutely deserves all the recognition of the command and the highest level of Government.”

What occurred? An alleged sicario boarded a bus as a passenger and shot the driver. The suspect then attempted to flee, but was pursued and fatally shot by a plainclothes police officer. A motorcycle believed to be used by an accomplice was abandoned at the scene.
