Cat Burns Celebrates “New Life” After Breast Reduction Surgery
A singer and recent celebrity Traitors finalist, Cat Burns, has publicly shared her journey following breast reduction surgery, marking what she describes as the beginning of a “new life.” The 25-year-old artist detailed years of discomfort and a long-held desire to align her body with her sense of self, a decision she announced via an Instagram story.
Burns revealed the “amount of relief and happiness” she’s experiencing is “overwhelming,” stemming from struggles with her body image as the age of 12.She shared a photo from her hospital bed, noting she “had a big fat cry” upon seeing her mother, sister, and girlfriend.
“I’ve always struggled with my boobies since they arrived on my chest at like 12,” Burns explained. “They caused me so much pain when exercising and I deeply hated the oversexualisation it brought.” She emphasized her proactive approach, stating she explored various solutions, including different bras, before deciding to undergo surgery. particularly when less invasive options like professionally fitted bras have proven ineffective. According to the National Health Service (NHS), common issues stemming from significantly large breasts include back, shoulder, or neck pain; skin irritation under the breasts; grooves on the shoulders from bra straps; low self-esteem or depression; and limitations in participating in sports or exercise.
However, access to the procedure isn’t worldwide. Factors such as a high body mass index (BMI) can sometimes preclude individuals from qualifying for surgery. A recent report indicated significant wait times for the procedure within the NHS. “There are thousands of people waiting for surgery from before Covid and the NHS are only seeing the most extreme cases just now,” stated a healthcare professional last month.
Data from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) reveals that breast reduction was the second most common surgical procedure performed in the UK between 2023 and 2024, following breast augmentation.
Celebrities Sharing Their Experiences
Burns is not alone in openly discussing the positive impact of breast reduction surgery. England rugby union player Rosie Galligan has also shared her “boob journey,” emphasizing the transformative effects on both her confidence and athletic performance. “If I didn’t have my reduction, I don’t think I’d be where I am today. Both on a confidence and physical level,” Galligan told BBC Sport in 2024. “Having the reduction is definitely one of the best things that’s happened for my sporting career and it’s definitely helped me get to where I am today. I’ve embraced my boob journey,it’s something that’s now part of my sporting journey.”
US chat show host and actress Drew Barrymore similarly expressed relief after undergoing the procedure as a teenager. “I really love my body and the way it is right now,” she shared on her show. “There’s something very awkward about women and their breasts because men look at them so much. When they’re huge, you become very self-conscious. Your back hurts. You find that whatever you wear, you look heavy in. It’s uncomfortable.”
actress ariel Winter, known for her role in Modern Family, recounted experiencing both physical pain and unwanted objectification prior to her operation. In a 2015 interview with Glamour, she explained, “It started to hurt so bad that I couldn’t take the pain.” She further elaborated on the pervasive issue of oversexualisation in the entertainment industry, stating, “Every article that has to do with me on a red carpet always had to do with, ‘Ariel Winter’s crazy cleavage!’, or, ‘Ariel Winter shows huge boobs at an event!’. That’s all people would recognize me by, not, ‘oh, she does great work on Modern Family’.”
These candid accounts highlight a growing trend of public figures normalizing conversations around body image and the empowering potential of surgical interventions for personal well-being.
