Briançon Unveils Running Mates and “La Fabrique des Quartiers” in Toulouse Campaign Push

A new phase of the campaign for the 2026 municipal elections in Toulouse began on thursday, January 8, as “The United Left” candidate, jean-Luc Briançon, announced his choices for running mate and launched a citizen engagement initiative aimed at shaping the group’s platform. The announcements signal a critical moment for the socialist candidate as he seeks to solidify support and define his vision for the city.

A “Founding Moment” for the Left in Toulouse

Briançon framed the press conference at Les Minimes as a “founding moment,” formally introducing Carole Bélot and Maog carvi as key members of his team. Alongside the introductions, he announced the launch of “La Fabrique des Quartiers,” a series of local meetings designed to gather input from residents across Toulouse.

“The idea is to enrich our program through exchanges in all districts of Toulouse, to achieve a global restitution by the end of January,” Briançon explained, with the first key themes expected to be revealed the following week. This initiative underscores a commitment to grassroots engagement and a collaborative approach to policy progress.

Diverse Profiles reflecting Toulouse

The selection of Bélot and carvi was presented as a intentional effort to represent the diversity of Toulouse. Briançon emphasized that the two candidates embody the values of the city, bringing different experiences and perspectives to the table.

Carole Bélot, a 28-year-old engineer and project manager in the space sector, is a newcomer to politics, joining the list as a member of Archipel Citoyen. Despite acknowledging her inexperience – “It’s very intimidating for me, I’m a complete novice” – Bélot articulated a clear set of priorities, including youth representation, gender equality, and the ecological transition. She highlighted the stark inequalities she witnesses in her professional life, stating, “In my very masculine professional surroundings, these inequalities are a daily reality.” Driven by eco-anxiety, Bélot believes empowering residents through citizen participation is crucial for effective local decision-making.

Maog carvi, a well-known figure as the founder of the Zebda group and Motivés, is stepping into a more direct political role, accepting an eligible position on the roster. Having previously supported municipal campaigns from the sidelines, carvi expressed a sense of urgency, stating, “I have always been on the periphery of politics. There, I said to myself: it might be time.” As a native of the Izards district, he aims to bridge the gap between working-class neighborhoods and the rest of the city, addressing the historical “opposition between the neighborhoods and the city” and fostering a stronger sense of community. He also emphasized the importance of secularism – “Secularism is the right to be different, to believe or not to believe. It is a key so that everyone can be free and feel part of the same community.”

Prospects for a Unified Left Remain Uncertain

When questioned about the possibility of a broader left-wing alliance for the second round of the election, carvi offered a cautious assessment. “I don’t believe in it much today, there are points of no return,” he stated, while acknowledging a long-held desire for a unified left to maximize chances of victory. Despite leaning towards the radical left,he affirmed his commitment to briançon’s platform, citing “the passion for nuance” as a driving factor.

Briançon concluded by emphasizing the importance of diverse voices in local governance, stating,”Society needs to be in movement. It’s healthy for peopel from cultural backgrounds to join more qualified profiles to exercise local responsibilities.”

The launch of “La Fabrique des Quartiers” and the introduction of Bélot and carvi represent a significant step forward for “The United Left for Toulouse” as the 2026 municipal elections draw closer.
