Welsh Football Legend Terry Yorath Dies at 75, Daughter Gabby Logan Pays Tribute

The celebrated Welsh footballer and manager Terry Yorath has died at the age of 75 following a short illness, prompting an outpouring of grief and remembrance from the sporting world and his family, including BBC presenter Gabby Logan.

Terry Yorath, a towering figure in Welsh football, passed away this week, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, skill, and resilience. His daughter, Gabby Logan, shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, describing him as a “kind-hearted and generous man” with a “wicked sense of humour.” Logan, a prominent presenter for the BBC’s Match of the Day, briefly left Wednesday night’s broadcast due to a “family emergency,” later confirmed to be her father’s passing.

Born in Cardiff, Yorath enjoyed a glittering career as a midfielder, notably captaining and managing Wales. He achieved a historic milestone in 1975, becoming the first Welshman to play in a European Cup final while with Leeds United. Logan’s tribute, accompanied by family photos spanning Yorath’s life and career, highlighted his impact both on and off the pitch.

“Our dad a warrior on the football pitch, captaining club and country, a kind hearted and generous man off it,” Logan wrote on Instagram. She recounted spending time with her father the previous day, sharing cherished moments discussing their favorite meals while he was hospitalized.

The news resonated throughout the football community, with former players and presenters offering condolences. Alan Shearer, Alex Scott, and Rio Ferdinand, all colleagues of Logan as pundits, sent supportive messages. Broadcasters Claudia Winkleman and Davina McCall also expressed their sympathy, with McCall praising Logan’s tribute as “beautifully written.”

Yorath’s life was also marked by profound personal tragedy. He was player-coach at Bradford City during the devastating Valley Parade fire in May 1985, which claimed the lives of 56 people and injured over 250. Logan noted that this event “defined the second half” of her father’s life.

Further heartbreak struck in 1992 when Yorath’s 15-year-old son, Daniel, tragically died from an undetected heart condition – hypertrophic cardiomyopathy – while playing football with his father. Logan expressed solace in the thought that Yorath was now “reunited” with Daniel, stating that being with him would “feel like home.”

Gabby Logan has since forged her own successful career as one of the BBC’s leading sports presenters, joining the network in 2007 and hosting major international events including the World Cup, European Championships, and Six Nations. She credited her father with instilling in her a “lifelong love of sport.”

Logan also extended her gratitude to the staff at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds for the “such tenderness” with which they cared for Yorath. She concluded her moving tribute with a simple, heartfelt message: “I love you dad,” accompanied by heart emojis and the Welsh flag.
