According to a statement from Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, ICE officers were conducting targeted operations when they were blocked by “rioters.” McLaughlin alleged that one of the protesters “weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them-an act of domestic terrorism.” An ICE officer then fired shots, fearing for the safety of themselves and others.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem echoed this account, stating that agents were attempting to move their vehicle when they were attacked by a woman who tried to run them over.
However, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey disputed this narrative. “The Trump administration is already trying to spin this as an action of self defence,” Frey said in a press conference. “Having seen the video myself,I want to tell everybody directly, that is bullshit. This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying, getting killed.” Frey also issued a direct demand: “ICE get the f*ck out of Minneapolis.”
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara confirmed that the incident is under investigation, and both he and mayor Frey called for peace as protesters gathered at the scene in south minneapolis.
