Letterman Condemns CBS News’ “Gutless” Rightward Shift

CBS News has descended into a “wreck” under its current leadership, according to former late-night host David Letterman, who unleashed a scathing critique of the network’s recent editorial decisions and perceived political alignment. Letterman’s remarks, shared in a clip on his YouTube page on Friday, reflect growing concerns among former CBS personalities regarding the direction of the news division.
A Legacy Tarnished
Letterman’s criticism centers on what he views as a betrayal of CBS News’ historical commitment to journalistic integrity. He specifically invoked the legacy of Edward R. Murrow, whose courageous reporting from London during World War II exemplified a dedication to truth-telling. “It was that mentality that drove the integrity of CBS News that has been trampled on, pissed on and eviscerated by these idiots that have taken it over,” Letterman stated.
The shift in tone and direction is largely attributed to the influence of Paramount CEO David Ellison, a known ally of former President Donald Trump, and Bari Weiss, the conservative journalist appointed as editor-in-chief of CBS News.
Cancellation of “The Late Show” Sparks Outrage
Letterman’s condemnation extends to the network’s decision in July to cancel “The Late Show,” the late-night program he originated over three decades ago and which was then hosted by Stephen Colbert. The cancellation was widely interpreted as a concession to political pressure during Paramount’s pursuit of a merger with Skydance Media, a deal requiring approval from the Trump administration. CBS maintains the decision was “purely a financial decision,” a claim Letterman vehemently disputes.
“I think one day, if not today, the people at CBS who have manipulated and handled this are going to be embarrassed because this is gutless,” Letterman said at the time.
Editorial Concerns and a Shift in Values
Under the new leadership, CBS News has faced mounting criticism for several editorial choices. A segment critical of the Trump administration was reportedly pulled from “60 Minutes,” and the network significantly reduced its guiding principles for “CBS Evening News” from a comprehensive 38-page handbook to “five simple values.” Notably, one of these core values is described as a “love” for America.
Concerns have also been raised regarding the performance of Tony Dokoupil, the permanent anchor of “CBS Evening News.” He faced immediate scrutiny during his first week for what critics described as overly deferential coverage of Secretary of State Marco Rubio and a perceived attempt to present “both sides” of the deadly January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Letterman’s outspoken criticism joins a chorus of discontent from former CBS stars, signaling a deeper unease about the future of the network’s news division and its commitment to independent journalism.
