E134 Road Closure: Storm Disrupts Travel in Norway, Haukelifjell Remains at Risk

A severe weather system prompted the closure of a key stretch of the E134 highway in Norway on Monday, with ongoing disruptions and potential further closures looming.
A section of the E134 between Korlevoll and Håradalen was initially closed just before 10:00 a.m. local time due to hazardous conditions caused by a powerful storm. The Road Traffic Center implemented column driving – also known as convoy driving – as a safety measure, beginning at 11:30 a.m. The primary concerns were rapidly deteriorating wind conditions and severely reduced visibility.
Hazardous Conditions Prompt Initial Closure
According to a local service provider responsible for clearing snow from private properties, the situation on the ground was precarious. “When I drove up here earlier, there were some violent gusts of wind,” stated a representative from Straumsøy Maskin, who was working on the west side of the closure near Korlevoll. “In some places it is completely bare, while in other places there are large shovels of snow.” The company emphasized they were not directly involved in the road closure decision, but their observations underscored the severity of the weather.
The E134 was fully reopened to normal traffic at 1:30 p.m. However, the reprieve was short-lived for some areas.
Haukelifjell Remains Under Threat
As of Monday evening, convoy driving remains in effect on the E134 above Haukelifjell. The Traffic Center is actively considering a full closure of this section of the highway as conditions continue to be monitored.
The ongoing disruptions highlight the challenges of maintaining safe travel conditions during periods of intense winter weather in mountainous regions. Travelers are advised to check road conditions and heed all warnings from authorities before embarking on journeys in affected areas.
