A full-time housewife’s remarkable 20 kg weight loss through dietary changes has sparked renewed interest in low-carbohydrate,high-fat diets. The story, initially shared on a health program in 2023, gained traction in online communities on January 16th, detailing the woman’s success with a lettuce-wrap approach to eating.
The Lettuce Wrap Revolution: Can Cutting Carbs Really Work?
Many busy mothers, juggling childcare and household responsibilities, often find themselves grabbing convenient foods like bread or rice cakes for meals. This woman, identified as “A,” found herself in the same situation, repeatedly trying and failing with various popular diets, often experiencing weight regain. Ultimately, she turned to a low-carbohydrate eating plan.
She reported losing the 20 kg by consuming a daily meal of grilled pork belly and onions, all neatly wrapped in crisp lettuce leaves. “When I was dieting before, I was starving, so my face was dull and I had no strength,” she explained. “Now, because I eat vegetables and meat, I don’t have constipation and my skin has improved.” She strongly advocates for limiting carbohydrates like rice cakes, bread, and flour to maintain a healthy weight.
What’s the best way to lose weight? A low-carb, high-fat diet, when combined with exercise, can be a healthy path to weight loss.
The appeal of low-carb eating isn’t limited to everyday individuals. Singer Uhm Jung-hwa publicly shared her own experience with the diet on her YouTube channel last year, stating she’d been following a low-carbohydrate, high-fat plan for approximately two years. She emphasized her focus on minimizing carbohydrate intake and avoiding sugar.
The Potential Downsides of Drastic Carb Restriction
while the results can be enticing, experts warn against overly restrictive carbohydrate diets. Kang Jae-heon, a professor of family medicine at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital, cautioned that drastically reducing carbohydrate intake can lead to initial side effects like headaches and fatigue. Long-term, it may increase the risk of hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular disease, constipation, and even depression due to excessive saturated fat consumption.
Professor Kang recommends a more moderate approach. “It is indeed better to slightly reduce carbohydrate intake rather than drastically reducing it,” he advised, also suggesting limiting sweet drinks, snacks, bread, and ice cream. He acknowledged that consuming a meal consisting solely of wraps and meat is acceptable, but noted that bread is the least healthy carbohydrate source, followed by rice cakes and than rice. “Since rice is eaten with a side dish, you can consume nutrients evenly,” he added.
Swift fact: Among common carbohydrates, bread is considered the least healthy option, followed by rice cakes and then rice.
