On Thursday evening 19 May, World IBD Day, the tower of the Rotterdam Ikazia Hospital will turn purple. With this we draw attention to the many people who suffer from IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease). IBD is a collective term for people with the chronic inflammatory bowel diseases ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.
Today, buildings worldwide are getting purple spotlights to raise awareness about chronic inflammatory bowel disease. An intestinal disease is often not immediately visible, but it can have a significant impact on the daily life of these patients. The complaints vary per person and can be different every day.
Awareness
People with IBD often have severe abdominal pain and diarrhea, requiring them to go to the toilet dozens of times a day and very suddenly. They are also often tired, they have to watch their food, always check whether there is a toilet nearby and they never know when the disease flares up again. To raise awareness about these diseases, World IBD Day has been established.
Movement
It is not always easy for people with a chronic bowel disease to get enough exercise. Care providers from the Ikazia Hospital and the Maasstad Hospital have therefore set up a walking group in South Rotterdam, especially for IBD patients. This walking group starts on June 2 and then meets every Thursday evening for 16 weeks to walk for hours. Movement gives a better grip on the condition and also helps to combat additional complaints, such as fatigue and sadness. For more information, visit www.ibdfit.nl. Interested parties can also register for the walking group on this website.
