The former president’s post, riddled with misspellings, alleges “19 Billion Dollars in Minnesota Somalia Fraud” and accuses Omar, whom he derisively labels a “Fake ‘Congresswoman’,” of being complicit. He went on to suggest she should face “jail, or even a worse punishment, sent back to Somalia,” a country he disparagingly described as “one of the absolutely worst countries in the World.” The post concluded with a provocative appropriation of his 2016 campaign slogan, stating Omar “could help to MAKE SOMALIA GREAT AGAIN!”
This latest outburst is not an isolated incident. Ilhan Omar has been a frequent target of the former president and his supporters, often facing racist outrage and calls for her removal from office. The attacks have consistently centered on her Somali heritage and her status as a naturalized U.S. citizen.
A History of Targeted Rhetoric
The former president has a documented history of attacking Omar. In 2019, he directed a racist tirade at Omar and three other women of color – Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna Pressley – collectively known as “The Squad,” telling them to “go back” to the countries they purportedly came from. This incident drew widespread condemnation and accusations of racism.
The current accusations echo previous attempts to link Omar to fraudulent activity, with MAGA figures attempting to blame the state’s Somali population for the alleged fraud. These claims remain unsubstantiated.
Omar Responds to ICE Criticism and Calls for Accountability
Simultaneously, Omar has been vocal in her criticism of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following the fatal shooting of Minneapolis woman Renee Good by ICE agent Jonathan Ross. She has demanded a “full, transparent investigation and legal action against ICE,” characterizing the shooting as “murder.”
“The lawful actions and the intimidation that is coming from this lawless administration is not going to stop us from knowing that we have the Constitution on our side,” Omar stated in a recent interview. She also pointed out that Minnesota voters have repeatedly rejected the former president at the ballot box.
Escalating Conspiracy Theories
In another post on Sunday, the former president amplified unsubstantiated conspiracy theories regarding Omar’s family and falsely linked her and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to the state’s alleged fraud cases. He questioned why Minnesota was “fighting” ICE’s efforts to deport individuals, suggesting the state harbored “murderers and drug dealers.” He further alleged that Omar’s marriage to her brother was a deliberate attempt to distract from the alleged fraud.
