Patient Accuses Sengkang General Hospital Nurses of Abuse and Malpractice

A 27-year-old woman has lodged police reports alleging abuse, harassment, and malpractice against nurses at Sengkang General Hospital, claiming she was subjected to verbal threats and use of force during her recent stay. The patient, who requested anonymity, detailed a series of disturbing incidents to AsiaOne, sparking an investigation by both the hospital and the police.

The allegations center around events that unfolded on the night of January 18th and into January 19th, after the patient was admitted to the hospital following a seizure related to urinary retention issues.

Initial Incident: Restraint and Alleged Threats

According to the patient, the incidents began after she left her hospital bed out of boredom and sat on a chair near the nurses’ counter seeking “fresh air.” She stated that when she attempted to understand how to unlock the chair, a nurse called for assistance to restrain her. While acknowledging the nurses’ concern for her safety following a seizure and potential fall risk, the patient alleges the situation escalated into a distressing encounter.

She claims she was “pushed into my room, where there is no CCTV,” and that during the transfer back to bed, a male registered nurse made deeply unsettling remarks. The patient alleges the nurse stated, “Since your parents are not around, I can do whatever I like,” followed by, “I have no patience with you as I have no children.” “I felt threatened, intimidated and unsafe,” she told AsiaOne.

Further Allegations: Pain and Procedural Concerns

The patient’s accusations extend beyond the initial incident. She alleges that on January 19th, around midnight, a nurse continued a medical procedure despite her repeated expressions of pain. Furthermore, she claims the nurse failed to follow standard operating procedures during the treatment.

“I’m deeply upset, traumatised and fearful for my safety and well-being while under medical care,” she stated. To support her claims, the patient presented AsiaOne with two police reports detailing the alleged abuse, harassment, and malpractice. Law enforcement officials have confirmed the reports were officially lodged.

Hospital Response and Ongoing Investigation

Sengkang General Hospital has acknowledged the allegations and stated they are actively investigating the matter. A hospital spokesperson said, “We will work with the relevant authorities while remaining in contact with the patient and her family to address their concerns.”

The spokesperson further emphasized the hospital’s commitment to patient safety, stating, “Our clinical teams follow established clinical protocols designed to ensure patient safety and wellbeing. These procedures are implemented when medically necessary to protect patients from harm.”

This case underscores the critical importance of patient safety and respectful care within healthcare settings. The investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
