Guaviare Massacre: Attorney General Rules Out FARC Dissident Clash, Points to Close-Range Executions

Colombia’s Attorney General’s Office has determined that the deaths of 26 people in the Guaviare department on January 16 were not the result of a confrontation between FARC dissident groups, but rather appear to be deliberate executions. The investigation, led by a prosecutor from the Specialized Directorate against Criminal Organizations based in Villavicencio, Meta, has uncovered evidence suggesting serious human rights violations.

Investigation Reveals Targeted Killings

Initial findings indicate the victims were shot at close range, a detail that immediately cast doubt on claims of a firefight. According to the Attorney General’s Office, “technical inspections of corpses and other activities carried out by personnel from the CTI of the Prosecutor’s Office and the SIJIN of the National Police…show that the victims were shot at close range, several of them in the head, which would rule out the existence of an armed confrontation.”

The investigation is now focused on determining the motive behind the killings and identifying those responsible. Ballistics and toxicology studies are underway to ascertain whether any substances were used prior to the victims’ deaths.

Victims Included Four Minors

The National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences has identified 24 of the 26 bodies as individuals connected to training activities involving FARC dissident leaders known as alias Iván Mordisco and alias ‘Calarcá’. Tragically, four of the deceased were minors – three young women and one young man.

A statement from the Institute detailed the breakdown of the victims: “Of the twenty-six (26) bodies approached, twenty-one (21) correspond to males and five (5) to females, among whom there are four (4) minors: one (1) man and three (3) women.” The identification process is being conducted in collaboration with the Prosecutor’s Office, with plans to release the bodies to their families once completed.

Ongoing Security Concerns in Guaviare

The incident underscores the ongoing security challenges in the Guaviare department, a region plagued by the presence of multiple FARC dissident structures vying for control of lucrative drug trafficking routes. Reports indicate that at least seven such groups are currently operating in the area, competing for dominance.

The Attorney General’s Office has committed to a thorough investigation to bring those responsible for this horrific act to justice. The findings will be crucial in understanding the dynamics of violence in the region and preventing future tragedies.
