Portland Trail Blazers guard Deni Avdija is enjoying his most statistically productive NBA season, recently posting 30 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists, as the Trail Blazers currently hold a 22-22 record and ninth place in the Western Conference.
Navigating Politics and Expectations as a Pro Athlete
The Israeli player is facing increased scrutiny as his success on the court collides with global political tensions.
- Avdija acknowledges the frustration of having his athletic achievements overshadowed by political discussions.
- He emphasizes his identity as an athlete first and foremost, while also expressing pride in his Israeli heritage.
- Avdija calls for respect as a basketball player, separate from geopolitical considerations.
- He criticizes uninformed opinions regarding the complex situation in his home country.
Avdija recently addressed the ongoing political reactions surrounding his nationality in an interview with The Athletic, stating, “I’m an athlete. I don’t get involved in politics, because it’s not my job. Obviously, I defend my country, because it’s where I’m from.” He expressed frustration with the negativity he encounters, noting that even strong performances or All-Star votes are often met with politically charged comments.
Why can’t I just be a good basketball player? Why does it matter if I’m from Israel, or anywhere else in the world, or whatever race I am? Just respect me as a basketball player,” Avdija questioned. He added that while he welcomes informed opinions, he expects credit for his skills regardless of personal beliefs, stating, “All this hate is for no reason. As if I decide things in the world.”

Avdija directly addressed the complaints he receives on social media, stating, “I’ll be honest: what do people expect me to do? This is my country, where I was born and raised. I love my country, there are many wonderful things in it.” He also expressed frustration with a perceived lack of understanding, adding, “Obviously, not everyone is educated and knows what is happening, and that’s what pisses me off.”
The Portland Trail Blazers player emphasized his pride in his Israeli identity, stating, “I am a proud Israeli, because it is where I grew up. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for Israel and the support the people and fans gave me.” However, he believes the extraneous issues surrounding his nationality are “simply unnecessary.”
“Because if you’re educated and you know what’s going on, it’s okay to speak your mind and say who you think is right or who’s wrong. But if you’re not educated and you’re not part of the Middle East, and you don’t understand how long this has been going on and you don’t understand the consequences and everything else, just don’t say anything,” Avdija concluded.
