Galatina Council Reshuffled Amidst Political Turmoil and Disappointment Over 2028 Capital of Culture Bid

A significant restructuring of the municipal council in Galatina, Italy, has ignited political controversy following the city’s unsuccessful bid to become the Italian Capital of Culture in 2028. The changes, announced by Mayor Fabio Vergine via decree 5/2026, have been attributed by the ruling coalition to pre-agreed rotations, while opposition figures allege the reshuffle is linked to internal political maneuvering and the fallout from the failed candidacy.

The council’s reorganization comes on the heels of disappointment surrounding Galatina’s failure to advance in the competition for the prestigious 2028 title. This setback appears to have exacerbated existing tensions within the local administration, culminating in the recent changes to the executive body.
New Council Appointments and Responsibilities
Mayor Vergine’s decree introduces three new members to the council: Francesco Sabato, Diego Garzia, and Pierluigi Mandorino, replacing Guglielmo Stasi, Camilla Palombini, and Giuseppe Spoti, respectively. The new appointments come with clearly defined portfolios:
- Diego Garzia: Assumes responsibility for Social Services, Social Territorial Area, Public Education, and the fractions of Collemeto and Santa Barbara.
- Pierluigi Mandorino: Will oversee Public Works, Heritage, Environment, Cemetery Services, Road Maintenance, and Public Greens.
- Francesco Sabato: Takes charge of economic planning and development, the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), community policies, sports, and youth policies.
In addition to these new assignments, Mariagrazia Anselmi will continue as Vice Mayor, overseeing Productive Activities and Tourism. Anna Maria Congedo will retain her responsibilities for program implementation, technological innovation, litigation, equal opportunities, and public residential building. Mayor Vergine will personally manage relations with external bodies, urban planning, stray animals, municipal police, the hamlet of Noha, relations with associations, and civil protection.
Former Councilor Alleges Targeted Exclusion
The most contentious aspect of the reshuffle centers around the removal of Camilla Palombini. In a public letter addressed to Mayor Vergine, Palombini vehemently denied any prior agreement regarding a rotation of her position. She asserted that the sole purpose of the changes was to exclude her from the municipal council and the broader political-administrative structure.
“It is not lost on me or the citizens that all the remodulation you carried out had the sole purpose of excluding me from the municipal council and from the political-administrative structure,” Palombini wrote. She further explained that her removal appeared to be a direct consequence of her refusal to run as a candidate for the regional elections, a decision she made to focus on her duties as welfare councilor. Palombini emphasized that the role was granted to her based on her electoral success, “without any subordination to anyone.” She reserved the right to pursue further legal action to protect her position and reputation.
Opposition Voices Concerns Over Political Interference
Loredana Tundo, a member of the opposition council group “Con,” echoed Palombini’s concerns, suggesting the reshuffle was not driven by Mayor Vergine’s independent decision-making. Tundo claimed the changes were a direct request from the mayor of Nardò, stemming from Palombini’s refusal to contest the regional elections on the League’s ticket.
“Everything else is a side dish, shifting of pawns and rotation, even physiological, of delegations,” Tundo stated. She also pointed to internal regrouping within the “Avanti Insieme” list and the ongoing adjustments following the regional elections, noting the Northern League’s recent shift in structure. Tundo characterized Vergine as being “at the mercy of some personalities” who were instrumental in his initial rise to power, highlighting the “defeat for the 2028 Capital of Culture” and a social media comment from the mayor’s secretary as further evidence of the underlying political dynamics.
The situation in Galatina underscores the complex interplay of local politics, regional ambitions, and the lingering disappointment of a missed opportunity on the national stage.
