Settler Violence Escalates Across west Bank, Targeting Religious and Civilian Sites

A surge in settler attacks has prompted condemnation and fears of further unrest in the occupied Palestinian territories.

  • Israeli settlers carried out coordinated attacks in Jenin, Nablus, and Bethlehem.
  • Attacks targeted cemeteries, mosques, agricultural land, and Palestinian homes.
  • Israeli forces were present during some attacks, offering protection to settlers.
  • International law deems Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank illegal.

What is the legal status of Israeli settlements in the West Bank? all Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, including those in and around occupied East Jerusalem, are considered illegal under international law, specifically the Fourth Geneva Convention, and numerous United Nations and Security Council resolutions. They are also classified as war crimes under international legal frameworks.

In the village of Bir al-Basha, south of Jenin, settlers invaded the “Iraqi Martyrs Cemetery” using all-terrain vehicles, conducting what local sources described as provocative tours of the grounds. Shortly after, the same group reportedly blocked a road near the town of Arraba, disrupting traffic and intimidating local residents.

Further violence was reported in Nablus, where settlers set fire to agricultural lands and damaged olive trees,a vital source of livelihood for many Palestinian families. In Bethlehem, a mosque was vandalized, and several homes were attacked, with residents reporting harassment and threats.

Eyewitness accounts and video footage circulating online show Israeli soldiers present during some of the attacks, seemingly providing protection to the settlers while largely ignoring the plight of the Palestinians. This perceived complicity has fueled anger and frustration among Palestinians and drawn criticism from international observers.

Later that evening, further invasions occurred across the hebron district, with soldiers reportedly firing tear gas, assaulting civilians, damaging property, and abducting a Palestinian man during a home invasion in Dura.

International law prohibits collective punishment and acts of terror against civilian populations, as outlined in Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention. Additionally,Article 49 explicitly forbids the deportation or transfer of populations into occupied territory, as well as forcible transfers of protected persons.

Furthermore, Article 53 and Article 147 prohibit the destruction of civilian property and classify pillage as a war crime.

The ongoing violence raises serious questions about the future of the occupied West Bank and the prospects for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
