Borrow a Drill, not a Headache: LA’s New Tool Library

The Los Angeles Public Library is expanding its offerings beyond books, now lending out power tools and gardening equipment to residents.

  • The Toolshed is located at the Central Library and offers a wide range of tools.
  • Borrowers need a valid Los Angeles Public Library card and must complete a safety orientation.
  • The library hopes the Toolshed will empower residents to take on home improvement projects and reduce waste.
  • Tools can be reserved online and checked out for up to three weeks.

What exactly is a tool library? it’s a lending service where people can borrow tools instead of buying them, saving money and storage space.

“We want to empower our community to take on DIY projects, learn new skills, and build a more sustainable lifestyle,” said Sarah Miller, the library’s director of community programs.

A Growing trend in Resource Sharing

The concept of tool libraries isn’t new, but it’s gaining traction as people seek more sustainable and affordable ways to access resources. The Los Angeles Public Library’s Toolshed builds on the success of similar initiatives in other cities, offering a valuable service. They are also exploring the possibility of adding workshops and classes to teach residents how to use the tools effectively.

“We’re excited to see how the community embraces this new resource,” miller said.”We believe the Toolshed has the potential to transform the way people approach home improvement and DIY projects.”

The Los Angeles public Library’s Toolshed is located at the Central Library, 630 W. Fifth St., Los Angeles, CA 90018. For more details and to reserve tools, visit the library’s website.
