A fire erupted in a bike shop in Milan on Sunday, January 25, 2026, triggering the evacuation of a five-story residential building and leaving dozens temporarily displaced. The swift response of firefighters contained the blaze, but significant smoke damage has rendered the building uninhabitable.
Rapid Response Prevents Wider Disaster
The fire broke out shortly before 12:30 p.m. in a bike shop located on the ground floor of a building at Via Plana 29, near Piazza Florence. Fire crews were able to quickly control the flames within the commercial establishment, which was closed at the time of the incident. However, smoke permeated the upper floors, necessitating the immediate evacuation of all residents.
“The immediate intervention of the firefighters was crucial in preventing the fire from spreading,” a senior official stated.
Health Concerns and Evacuee Support
At least 22 individuals required medical attention following the incident. Areu health workers arrived on the scene with six ambulances and two medical cars to provide assistance. Among those treated were a 6-year-old girl and several elderly residents. Fourteen people were treated at the scene, while eight others – including three minors – were transported to Sacco and Niguarda hospitals in stable condition, categorized as “code green.”
The Municipality’s Civil Protection agency has stepped in to provide food and temporary shelter for the displaced residents. The ATM, Milan’s public transportation authority, has provided a bus to serve as a temporary accommodation center while the condominium administrator seeks alternative housing solutions.
Building Declared Unsafe, Investigation Underway
Following a thorough assessment, firefighters have declared the building structurally unsafe and uninhabitable. Residents will not be permitted to return to their homes in the immediate future. Reclamation activities are ongoing and are expected to continue throughout the afternoon, led by the Milan Fire Command.
Police officers and traffic control personnel were also dispatched to Via Plana to manage traffic flow in the affected area. Investigators are currently working to determine the cause of the fire, with an electrical malfunction in the bike shop considered a potential factor given the nature of the business.
