A notorious South African criminal, Thabo Bester, lived for months as a free man under the alias TK Nkwana after a daring escape from prison, engaging in further fraudulent activities before his capture and return to custody.
Following his escape, Bester established a lavish lifestyle in a luxury villa in Hyde Park, Johannesburg – one of the city’s most exclusive neighborhoods. Like his associate, Magudumana, he quickly resumed criminal enterprises, specifically targeting the real estate sector. Bester allegedly collected deposits for construction projects that were never realized, perpetuating a cycle of fraud and deception.
The Hunt Ends in Tanzania
The period of freedom came to an end on April 8, 2023, in Arusha, Tanzania. Bester was apprehended while attempting to leave the country, found to be in possession of multiple false passports and fraudulent documents. He was subsequently deported back to South Africa and transferred to highly secured correctional facilities.
Maximum Security and Expanding Charges
Currently, Thabo Bester is detained at Kgosi Mampuru Central Maximum Prison in Pretoria, where he remains under constant surveillance by highly trained officers. Beyond the original sentence he was serving, a series of new charges have been added, including tax evasion, fraud, and aiding and abetting his escape. Authorities are also investigating other crimes related to the management of his fraudulent schemes.
