Alex Ovechkin’s Monumental Memorabilia Collection to Find Home in Moscow

As Alex Ovechkin nears the end of his illustrious NHL career, the hockey superstar is meticulously preserving a legacy that extends far beyond the ice – a vast and growing collection of memorabilia destined for a museum in his hometown of Moscow.
The scope of Ovechkin’s collection, detailed by a teammate earlier in January on the Pardon My Take podcast, reveals a dedication to preserving every milestone of his historic goal-scoring pursuit. According to the teammate, for the last hundred goals, or since surpassing 800 career goals, Ovechkin has secured signatures from the players who assisted on each score, directly on the back of his game-worn jersey.
A Museum in the Making
The centerpiece of this collection will be a museum, currently planned as an addition to Ovechkin’s future hockey academy in Russia. “He has a museum that’s like going to go up in Russia,” the teammate explained. “So every time he scores a goal, he gets the stick, the puck, the jersey. And like throughout that run, he was getting like his socks, like the game socks.” The museum’s concept, as outlined on the Ovi Academy website, envisions a multi-purpose sports ecosystem complete with two ice rinks and dining options.
The academy’s website states that the project will be “based on (a) full-fledged and multi-purpose sport ecosystem” combining training, tournaments, recreation, and rehabilitation. It aims to become “one of the attraction centers on the Moscow map.”
Beyond Personal Keepsakes: A Collector of Opponents’ Gear
Ovechkin’s collecting extends beyond his own achievements. He has also been actively acquiring memorabilia from his rivals, engaging in jersey swaps with prominent NHL players such as Evgeni Malkin, Brady Tkachuk, and Brad Marchand throughout the current season.
In April, Ovechkin personally transported the puck and stick from his record-breaking 895th goal – scored against the New York Islanders – back to Russia during the offseason. This gesture underscores the importance of his homeland in his long-term plans for the collection.
With Ovechkin continuing his pursuit of Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal record, it’s clear that his memorabilia collection will only continue to grow, promising a truly remarkable tribute to one of hockey’s greatest players.
