Three Deaths Reported in Downtown Houston Amid Severe Cold

Three individuals were found deceased in separate locations throughout downtown Houston on Monday, prompting investigations into the circumstances surrounding their deaths as temperatures plummeted.

Authorities responded to multiple reports, discovering two individuals under a freeway and another in a nearby park. While initial investigations reveal no immediate signs of foul play, the role of the cold weather in these tragedies remains unclear. Autopsies are scheduled to determine the official cause of death in each case.

Welfare Checks Lead to Discovery Near US 59

Around 5 p.m. local time, a man and a woman were found during routine welfare checks on Congress Street, positioned beneath US 59. Investigators reported finding both individuals wrapped in blankets, approximately 50 feet apart.

“There’s several people out here that have been camping here,” stated a spokesperson for the Houston Police Department. “They’re under blankets and stuff. Officers have been offering the opportunity to go to a warming center. We have several centers set up around the city. Two of them agreed to go, and we’ve got some other people refusing. Officers will continue checking on those who stay outside.”

The police department is actively working to connect homeless residents with available resources, including shelters and warming centers, as the city experiences a period of frigid temperatures.

Separate Death Reported at Tranquility Park

In a separate incident, the body of a woman was discovered at Tranquility Park, a public space located near Houston City Hall. Law enforcement officials confirmed that, similar to the previous case, there were no immediate indications of criminal activity. An autopsy has been ordered to ascertain the cause of death.

Authorities are strongly encouraging anyone in need of shelter during the ongoing cold snap to utilize the city’s network of warming centers.
