Grocery Price Wars Heat Up: Obs Takes January Crown as Shoppers Flock to Chicken and Salmon Deals

Consumers are increasingly focused on value as grocery prices fluctuate, with demand surging for healthier options like chicken and salmon. Recent analysis from DinSide reveals a dynamic shift in grocery offers, with Obs emerging as the top performer in January and Kiwi claiming the title of the month’s cheapest chain.

Healthier Choices Drive Demand

Despite the traditional slump in New Year’s resolutions by mid-January, a clear trend toward healthier eating is evident in shopping habits. DinSide’s price trackers report significant demand for chicken fillet, with some stores struggling to keep up with consumer appetite.

“It is difficult to get hold of the chicken package you want, since the chicken flies off the shelves as quickly as it comes in,” noted a price expert. This surge in demand for healthier proteins like chicken and salmon signals a continued interest in wellness, even after the initial enthusiasm of January 1st fades.

Weekly Savings Reach NOK 723

DinSide’s team meticulously compared prices across eight major grocery chains – Meny, Kiwi, Ekstra, Rema 1000, Obs, Bunnpris, Spar, and Prix – to identify the best deals. Their efforts uncovered total potential savings of NOK 723 in the average shopping basket during week 5.

The top three bargains of the week, based purely on price, are chicken fillet, Pepsi Max, and snacks, offering a combined savings of NOK 236. Beyond these standout deals, consumers can also find reasonable prices on staples like Omo detergent, currently priced at NOK 23.90 for a 0.75L bottle.

Obs and Bunnpris Battle for Offer Supremacy

The competition for the best overall offers remains fierce between Obs and Bunnpris. For the past three years, these two chains have consistently vied for the top spot, with Bunnpris typically prevailing. However, January saw a shift in momentum.

“These chains have been fighting to be the best on offer for the past three years, with Bunnpris each time drawing the longest straw,” explained one of DinSide’s price hunters. This year, Obs secured three first-place wins, compared to Bunnpris’s single victory this week. Both chains are currently offering competitive deals, earning a “dice roll of 6” in DinSide’s assessment.

One anecdote highlighted the popularity of offers: at one Bunnpris location, freezers were reportedly emptied of Pizza Grandiosa due to high demand, though the store assured customers that restocking was underway.

Kiwi Crowned Cheapest Chain of the Month

While Obs leads in offer quality, Kiwi has been recognized as the cheapest grocery chain overall for January. Analyzing 125 different items and 1248 individual prices, DinSide determined that Kiwi offered the lowest total cost for the tested products, with Extra coming in second.

“In January, there were a lot of good offers on fish and chicken, while the good offers you found on chocolate, cheese, butter and porridge throughout December are a thing of the past,” concluded a DinSide analyst. “There we have been hit by the blue Monday again.”
