A revitalized atmosphere and a focus on genuine connection are at the heart of the Palais Mascotte’s reopening, marking a new chapter for Zurich’s oldest club.Bella, 41, the new hostess, is spearheading the transformation of this historic venue.
A Historic venue Gets a Modern Makeover
The Palais Mascotte, located in the Corso building at Zurich’s Bellevue, has undergone recent renovations, with work concluding on January 5th. While the club’s structural integrity remains unchanged, the redesign focuses on creating a more inviting and contemporary ambiance. According to Bella, the changes are primarily cosmetic, including “new colors, a more feminine ambience and decorative measures, such as new lamps.” A key element of the renovation is the restoration of access to the lake-facing windows, previously obscured by reserved lounge areas. “This unique window front should be accessible to everyone,” Bella emphasized.
From Berlin to Bellevue: A passion Project takes Root
Bella’s connection to the Mascotte extends beyond her current role. having moved to Zurich from Berlin in 2013, she previously served as the club’s operations manager for three years. After a period working in the theater and events sector, she seized the possibility to take the helm when the previous operators decided to step down. “It was clear to me that I wanted to take over the club,” she stated, adding that the concept and business plan “were written quickly – as if everything had already been in my head.”
Her vision quickly gained the support of Freddy Burger, the long-time operator who, alongside Udo Jürgens, ran the Mascotte since 1977. “He liked the concept,” Bella shared, leading to a partnership that promises to honor the club’s legacy while embracing a fresh perspective.
A Dual Experience: Bar & Club Under One Roof
The Palais Mascotte will offer a dual experience, operating as a bar from 6 p.m. and transitioning into a full-fledged club at 10 p.m., from Wednesday to Saturday.Bella envisions a welcoming habitat for all, stating, “Everyone is welcome, after work, with friends, with work colleagues or alone – you should be able to be who you are here.”
The musical direction will be carefully curated, featuring genres like Italo Disco, Disco Funk, and Chicago House. “The music is curated, and in the bar we have music selectors: They specifically select suitable music,” Bella explained. The newly positioned DJ booth in the center of the room underscores the importance of music to the club’s identity. rather than focusing on specific headliners, the Palais Mascotte will prioritize a consistently high-quality musical experience, with many DJs incorporating vinyl into their sets.
A Commitment to Atmosphere and Connection
Beyond the music, Bella is focused on creating a space for meaningful interactions. Guests can expect a selection of expertly crafted cocktails, including Amaretto sours and Negroni variations. She intends to be actively involved in the club’s daily operations, stating, “I’ll clear away glasses too,” and ensuring a smooth experience for all patrons.
The reopening event on Thursday is primarily for invited guests, but the club will also admit visitors based on capacity. The official launch for the general public will take place over the weekend.
Addressing concerns about the evolving nightlife landscape, Bella believes the Palais Mascotte’s flexible hours and inclusive atmosphere will resonate with a broad audience. “We create a space for evenings that fit into every everyday life,” she said. She also emphasized that going out is “an investment – namely in life, in conversations and in gorgeous moments, without having to achieve a goal.” Ultimately, Bella’s goal is simple: “The main thing is to celebrate the joy of life.”
