Sci-Fi Prophecy: Is 2024 the End of the World?

Star Trek Prophecy: Is World War III Imminent in 2026?

According to a surprising prediction woven throughout the Star Trek universe, humanity may be on the precipice of a global conflict long foretold: World War III. While known for its optimistic vision of the future, the franchise posits that a catastrophic war is a necessary precursor to the utopian society depicted in later series, and the timeline suggests it could begin this year.

The enduring appeal of Star Trek lies in its hopeful portrayal of a future free from the burdens of poverty, disease, and war. However, a core tenet of the franchise’s lore is that progress demands sacrifice, and a dark chapter must first unfold before humanity can achieve lasting peace. This pivotal event is World War III, a global conflict slated to erupt in 2026.

The Genesis of Conflict: Colonel Phillip Green

Much of the foundational knowledge regarding World War III originates in Star Trek: The Original Series. Episodes like “Bread and Circuses” and “The Savage Curtain” introduce Colonel Phillip Green, a figure responsible for leading ecoterrorist attacks that resulted in the deaths of 37 million people. One analyst noted that Green is potentially the catalyst for the war itself, described in “The Savage Curtain” as leading a “genocidal war” later identified as WWIII.

Details surrounding Colonel Green remain sparse in The Original Series, beyond his reputation for betraying adversaries during peace negotiations. Later, Star Trek: Enterprise expanded on his character, portraying him as a ruthless leader who eliminated individuals with radiation sickness and other perceived “impurities,” fearing the transmission of undesirable traits to future generations. This depiction casts Green as a chillingly Hitler-like figure, driven by a dangerous obsession with eugenics.

2026: The Year the Future Changed

The timeline for World War III was solidified in the fan-favorite film Star Trek: First Contact, which pinpointed 2026 as the year the conflict would begin. The film also identified the Eastern Coalition as one of the key factions involved. The premiere episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation revealed that various factions employed drugs to control their soldiers, while Discovery and Strange New Worlds depicted nuclear attacks on major cities – including Richmond, Washington, New York, and Paris – as late as 2053.

Strange New Worlds has further complicated the narrative by retroactively connecting World War III to the Eugenics Wars, a conflict first mentioned in The Original Series. During a turbulent period in Earth’s history, unethical scientists pursued selective breeding and genetic editing to create a race of “Augments,” or supersoldiers. The most infamous of these was Khan Noonien Singh, who would become a legendary adversary to Captain James T. Kirk.

Khan and the Shadow of Eugenics

These Augments attempted a global takeover, seizing control of over 40 nations before being ultimately defeated. While most were tried and executed as war criminals, Khan and his followers escaped into cryogenic stasis, only to be awakened by Captain Kirk. In the classic episode “Space Seed,” Spock revealed a detail that Star Trek initially attempted to downplay: the Eugenics Wars spanned from 1992 to 1996.

The franchise’s reluctance to emphasize this timeline stemmed from the difficulty of envisioning major global upheaval in the 1990s, particularly after the end of the Cold War. This is evident in the Voyager episode “Future’s End,” which takes place in 1996 and shows no evidence of the widespread conflict that claimed over 30 million lives.

Retcons and Temporal Interference

Strange New Worlds addressed this inconsistency in a surprising manner. “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow” revealed that temporal meddling had altered Khan’s timeline, delaying his birth but not preventing his eventual rise to power. In the Picard episode “Farewell,” Doctor Adam Soong was seen examining a file titled “Project Khan” dating back to 1996, suggesting a renewed effort to recreate the Augments.

This places Khan on a trajectory to become a major player when World War III erupts in 2026. Further solidifying this connection, Captain Pike, in the premiere episode of Strange New Worlds, noted that Earth’s last major global conflict had been referred to by various names over time: “We called it the Second Civil War, then the Eugenics War, and finally just World War III.”

Previously, Spock claimed in “Space Seed” that the Eugenics Wars occurred during World War III. Now, Pike is retroactively suggesting they are the same conflict, or at least overlapping periods within a larger, protracted struggle. The presentation Pike shows to a group of aliens includes footage of the January 6th attack on the United States Capitol, suggesting the Second Civil War began in early 2021, followed by the Eugenics Wars after 2024, culminating in the outbreak of World War III in 2026.

The Clock is Ticking: 2026 and Beyond

That makes this year a critical juncture. Given Star Trek’s prediction, a senior official stated that it may be prudent to prepare for the worst. This includes prioritizing relationships, self-care, and eliminating negativity from one’s life.

And, perhaps, reconsidering that Paramount+ subscription. As one viewer quipped, even if the world doesn’t end in apocalyptic disaster, the streaming service’s content may feel like a plague of its own.
