Northern Illinois Gymnastics Defeats UW-La Crosse, Sets Season Highs

The Northern Illinois University gymnastics team secured a decisive victory over the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Sunday, February 1, with a final score of 193.000 to 191.400. The Huskies dominated the competition at the NIU convocation Center, winning three of the four rotations in their second home meet of the season.
A team official expressed strong satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating, “Really impressed with how they kept plugging away. We had some nice, solid performances across the board.” The win underscores the team’s resilience and consistent betterment throughout the season.
Brown Shines, Sets Personal Best
Mikayla Brown, a junior gymnast from Suwanee, Georgia, led the Huskies with impressive scores of 9.800 in both the beam and floor exercises. This performance marked a season-high for Brown, who has now placed on floor in consecutive meets. Her consistent performance is becoming a cornerstone of the team’s success.
Freshman Elizabeth Poncin and sophomore Maria King also achieved career-high marks on the uneven bars. Poncin secured frist place with a score of 9.775, marking her second top finish on bars in the last three meets. King followed closely behind, finishing second with a 9.750.
Vault Dominance Kicks off Competition
the Huskies started strong in Rotation One, earning a 48.325 on vault and sweeping the top three finishes. Sophomores Audrey Brenner and freshman Alanah Wallace tied for first place with a vault score of 9.725, demonstrating the team’s strength in this event. Junior Dawsyn Sallee secured third place with a score of 9.700.
A team representative highlighted the vault’s impact, saying, “(Vault) really got us off to a great start. We had great vaults from Alanah and Audrey. They put some really nice vaults up on the table. The girls are landing well.”
Bars and Beam showcase Emerging Talent
In Rotation Two, Poncin and King’s strong performances on bars were complemented by freshman Makenna Brooks, who achieved a new personal best with a score of 9.650.
Rotation Three saw Brown’s exceptional beam performance, tying a team-high score of 9.800 for the season. brooks and Sallee also contributed substantially, each earning a 9.675 and setting another season-high for Brooks.
Huskies Finish Strong on Floor
The huskies closed the meet with a powerful performance on floor in Rotation Four, sweeping the top three finishes and achieving their highest event score of the dual with 48.675. Brown secured her first win on floor of the season, while sophomore Drake White and senior Jocelyn Harbeck rounded out the top three.
