Brown Men’s Tennis Dominates Holy Cross and Marist, Extends Undefeated Streak

Brown University’s men’s tennis team continued its impressive start to the season, securing a pair of victories on Sunday, February 2nd, defeating Holy Cross 7-0 and Marist 6-1 at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The wins elevate the Bears’ record to a perfect 4-0 on the year.
Commanding Performance Against Holy Cross
The Brown men’s tennis team showcased its strength against Holy Cross, sweeping the Crusaders in a decisive 7-0 victory. The day began with a strong showing in doubles play. Ivan Sodan and Zander Bravo opened with a 6-4 win over Matt Carlson and Patrick Ling, setting a positive tone for the match. While Elliot Wasserman and Theo Murphy faced a tough challenge, falling 7-6 to Ezequiel De la Plaza and Teddy Callery, the Bears rebounded with a 6-4 victory from Toby Luo and Lukas Phimvongsa over Aayush Jhaveri and Colton Parker.
The momentum continued into singles competition, where Brown demonstrated complete control. Sodan defeated Carlson in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5, while Phimvongsa followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win over De la Plaza. Robert Yang and Alex Koong added to the Bears’ tally with dominant 6-1, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-3 victories, respectively. Murphy secured a win over Camilo Illanes, 7-6, 6-3, and Luo completed the sweep with a commanding 6-3, 6-0 performance against Jhaveri.
Battling to Victory Over Marist
Later in the day, Brown faced Marist, emerging with a 6-1 win. The Bears continued their dominance in doubles, with Sodan and Bravo delivering a decisive 6-0 victory over Anirudh Nallaparaju and Jose Catala. Wasserman and Murphy followed with a 6-2 win against Ian Layton and Thomas Bevan, and Phimvongsa and Luo completed the doubles sweep with a 6-3 victory over Alejandro Abella Fernandez and Gregor Heinemann.
Singles play against Marist proved to be a test of resilience. Sodan earned a hard-fought win over Catala, 6-3, 7-6, while Phimvongsa added a 6-1, 6-2 result against Layton. Despite a valiant effort, Wasserman battled through a tight three-setter before falling to Abella Fernandez, 6-1, 4-6, 5-7. However, the Bears responded strongly. Yang edged Nallaparaju in a competitive match tiebreak, 6-2, 6-7(4), 1-0(11), and Koong posted a steady 6-4, 6-3 win over Bevan. Luo closed out the day with a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Heinemann.

Brown will continue its season on Friday, February 6th, welcoming Boston College to the Pizzitola Sports Center at 5 p.m.
