Basel-Stadt Launches Initiative to Boost Supplementary Benefit Access
Nearly one-third of eligible residents in the canton of Basel-Stadt are currently not receiving crucial supplementary benefits designed to combat poverty and secure livelihoods in old age or in the event of disability, prompting a proactive intervention by local authorities. The Government Council is implementing a revised law, approved by the Grand Council, focused on increasing awareness and access to these vital resources.
Addressing a Significant Gap in Social Support
According to officials, around 30% of those qualified for supplementary benefits are missing out – a statistic that underscores the need for improved outreach. The initiative, set to roll out in the first half of 2026, will center around direct communication with potentially eligible individuals. A total of approximately 3,400 information letters will be dispatched, with roughly 80% targeted towards AHV pensioners and the remaining 20% directed to recipients of IV (disability insurance) benefits.
These letters will clearly outline the eligibility requirements and detail the steps required for registration. Recognizing the complexities of navigating social support systems, the project will leverage the expertise of established organizations. Pro Senectute and Pro Infirmis will be actively involved, offering personalized advice and assistance with the registration process to those contacted.
Multi-Channel Approach to Information Dissemination
The effort extends beyond direct mail. The Office for Social Contributions is providing a range of accessible resources to further inform the public. An easily understandable information flyer will explain the benefits, eligibility criteria, and registration procedures. Furthermore, the cantonal website will host comprehensive information, including an explanatory video available in multiple languages.
A significant upgrade to the application process has also been implemented: residents can now apply for supplementary benefits online. This digital accessibility aims to streamline the process and remove barriers for those comfortable with online services.
Ensuring Equitable Access to Statutory Benefits
“The goal is simple: to ensure that eligible individuals are fully aware of the statutory benefits available to them and can access them when needed,” a senior official stated. By proactively reaching out and providing clear, accessible information, the canton of Basel-Stadt is taking a significant step towards strengthening its social safety net and ensuring that vulnerable populations receive the support they deserve.
