All-Star Action: Team Nichika Claims Victory in Kobe

The SV League All-Star Games delivered a unique blend of serious competition and lighthearted fun, culminating in a win for Team Nichika.

  • Team Nichika defeated Team Yoshino in three sets (25-19, 25-15, 25-14).
  • The match featured several special rules, including a “foot-only” set and coach-led serves.
  • Jean of Team Nichika was named the “Emut MVP” for her outstanding performance.
  • Wada of Team Nichika earned the “Mmut Speed King Award” with a serve clocked at 95.5 km/h.

The newly opened arena buzzed with anticipation as the festival of volleyball began, promising “a variety of gimmicks centered around serious play.” The first set quickly escalated into a fierce battle, despite the players and coaches displaying friendly demeanor before the serve. Team Nichika drew first blood with a powerful block from Butler, who continued to dominate at the net, energizing the crowd with consecutive blocks.

Team Yoshino initially took the lead, but a challenge from Team Nichika’s head coach, Kumi Nakata, at 8-11 signaled a shift in momentum. Though the challenge was unsuccessful, Butler’s fourth block point tied the score at 12-11. Team Nichika maintained a narrow advantage, and a strategic introduction of a special “emmut ball” – awarding two points – by Nakata when Hirayama served at 20-18 proved decisive. Giang Thi Tan Tuy capitalized on the opportunity, spiking to extend the lead to 22-18, ultimately securing the first set 25-19.

The second set, played to 15 points, introduced even more unconventional rules. In a particularly memorable moment, a “foot-only” game saw Rosamaria, representing Brazil’s soccer heritage, demonstrate impressive serve-receive skills with her feet, while Jean humorously lost a point attempting a header. Adding to the spectacle, the coaches themselves took to the service line, with Nakata delivering an underhand serve and Team Yoshino’s coach, Hirohiro Nakatani, showcasing skillful digs after his serve.

Team Nichika continued their winning streak, taking the second set as well. The third set saw players switch to their team uniforms, signaling a return to more traditional competition. Yamada and Wada made significant contributions with powerful attacks and serves, while Jean consistently delivered key spikes. Team Nichika ultimately dominated, winning the third set 25-14.

The award ceremony following the match was filled with celebratory dances and camera flashes. Minoru Iwasawa received the “Mmut Best Entertainment Award,” while Wada was recognized as the “Mmut Speed King” for his blistering 95.5 km/h serve. Nonaka of Team Yoshino earned the “Fighting Award” for her impressive ceiling serve in the first set, and Jean was crowned the “Emut MVP.”

Looking ahead, organizers announced that the next All-Star Game will be held at Escon Field in Hokkaido.
