SpaceX has acquired its artificial intelligence arm, xAI, as Elon Musk lays out an ambitious vision to power the future of AI with limitless solar energy harvested in space. The move,announced Monday,signals a dramatic escalation in Musk’s efforts to overcome what he sees as terrestrial limitations to AI growth.
Musk argues that the escalating demand for artificial intelligence cannot be sustainably met by Earth’s resources.In a blog post published on SpaceX’s website, he contends that building massive datacenters in space is the only viable path forward, leveraging the sun’s constant energy output. “This marks not just the next chapter, but the next book in SpaceX and xAI’s mission: scaling to make a sentient sun to understand the Universe and extend the light of consciousness to the stars,” Musk wrote.
The core of the plan relies on SpaceX’s Starship rocket, despite its current status as a vehicle still undergoing test flights. Musk confidently predicts Starship will soon be capable of launching on an hourly schedule, carrying a 200-ton payload on each flight. “My estimate is that within two to three years, the lowest cost way to generate AI compute will be in space,” he stated. “Long term space-based AI is obviously the only way to scale.”
According to Musk’s calculations, launching a million tons of satellites annually, each generating 100kW of compute power, would add 100 gigawatts of AI capacity. He envisions a future where Earth could launch a terawatt of AI compute power per year.
However, the plan appears to overlook practical considerations. One analyst noted that the inherent reliability issues of computer hardware and the need for ongoing human oversight were not addressed in Musk’s proposal.
Musk’s vision extends beyond Earth orbit.He proposes establishing factories on the Moon to utilize lunar resources for satellite manufacturing and deployment. “Factories on the Moon can take advantage of lunar resources to manufacture satellites and deploy them further into space,” he explained. “By using an electromagnetic mass driver and lunar manufacturing, it is indeed possible to put 500 to 1,000 terawatts a year of AI satellites into deep space.”

Giant datacenters in the sky, operating outside of established legal frameworks, could possibly facilitate a wide range of malicious activities.
