NFL Expands Global Footprint with Games in Paris, Australia, and Return to Mexico

The National Football League is aggressively expanding its international presence, announcing plans to bring regular-season games to Paris in 2026, Australia for the first time, and return to Mexico City after a two-year hiatus. This strategic move underscores the league’s commitment to cultivating a global fanbase and tapping into new revenue streams.

The NFL has seen increasing success with international games, and this latest announcement builds on that momentum. Spain recently hosted its inaugural game at Bernabeu Stadium in November, marking the beginning of a “multi-year commitment” to play in Madrid. France will become the fifth European nation to host regular-season games, joining the United Kingdom, Germany, Ireland, and Spain.

“Bringing a regular-season game to Paris in 2026 marks an exciting next step in the continued expansion of the league’s global footprint,” said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

Focus on France and the New Orleans Saints

The decision to play in Paris is particularly noteworthy due to the existing connection between the city and the New Orleans Saints. The Saints are the only NFL team with official marketing rights in France as part of the league’s global markets programme. This allows the team to actively engage with French fans and build brand loyalty.

“This moment is special not only because of the strong cultural connection between Louisiana and France, but also because we will compete before a growing Saints fan base in Paris,” said Saints owner Gayle Benson. This dedicated fanbase is expected to drive significant ticket sales and engagement for the game.

Return to Mexico and Expansion in Europe & Beyond

Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca, which underwent renovations in preparation for this summer’s World Cup, will once again host NFL games for the next three seasons. The league is also solidifying its presence in Europe, with London scheduled to host three games during the 2026 season.

Beyond Europe and North America, the NFL is looking further afield. In addition to Australia’s debut in 2026, games are also planned for Brazil and Germany during the same season. This widespread distribution of games demonstrates the NFL’s ambition to become a truly global sport.

The league’s international strategy is proving successful, and these continued expansions are expected to further solidify the NFL’s position as a leading sports and entertainment property worldwide.
