Russia tightens gas sanctions: Another country will be cut off from supplies

by time news

Finland’s largest gas supplier, Gassom, which is wholly owned by the government, announced last night that starting this morning, Russian gas supplies will be stopped. The Finnish company further added that the scenario was on their table and they were well prepared. They noted that “there will be no disruption in gas supply, we will be able to supply the demand in the coming months.”

It should be noted that Russian gas constitutes only 5% of Finland’s energy consumption, and is used mainly for the benefit of industry and factories, and not for private domestic heating as in other European countries, so the Finns’ decision not to fold against Russian demands was prudent and calculated.

Until the matter is settled in peace, Finland will receive gas from the pipeline coming from Estonia, but its capacity may not be enough, as the Russian gas supply accounts for about 70% of the country’s total gas consumption. The Finnish government, part of a response to the incident, has announced that it will hire together with the Estonian state a floating rig to receive liquefied natural gas for the coming winter months.
