Biofach Trade Show to Expand Focus to Sustainable Nutrition in 2027

The world’s leading organic food trade fair, Biofach, is poised for a significant evolution, broadening its scope beyond organic certification to encompass the wider field of sustainable nutrition starting in 2027. This strategic shift aims to attract new audiences and drive innovation within the food industry.

Biofach, held annually in Nuremberg, Germany, has long been a cornerstone for the organic food sector. However, trade fair management announced in a recent interview that the event will reposition itself as a “central platform for sustainable nutrition,” signaling a move to address evolving consumer demands and industry challenges.

A Need for Broader Perspectives

The decision to expand Biofach’s focus comes after feedback from both exhibitors and visitors, according to a senior official. “If we want to be sustainable as an industry, we also need new perspectives, new players and a look beyond our own bubble,” the official stated, emphasizing the need for a more inclusive approach. The trade fair will integrate topics related to sustainable nutrition into both its congress program and exhibition space.

This expansion doesn’t mean abandoning the core principles of organic agriculture. “We always think consistently from the organic core,” the official clarified, assuring stakeholders that organic food will remain central to the Biofach experience. Instead, the goal is to create a space where diverse actors and concepts – even those outside the traditional organic world – can contribute to the conversation, provided they share a commitment to long-term sustainability.

Three Pillars of the Future Biofach

From 2027, Biofach will be structured around three key thematic areas:

  • Organic Food: Remaining the foundational element of the trade fair.
  • Near Food: Encompassing supporting industries such as machinery for organic production, innovative packaging solutions, and advancements in breeding practices.
  • Sustainable Nutritional Concepts: Exploring broader approaches to food systems and their impact on the environment and public health.

The initial focus within the “Sustainable Nutritional Concepts” area will be on Fair Trade, with dedicated space in Hall 9. This choice reflects the significant overlap between organic and Fair Trade principles – over half of products with the Fairtrade logo are also organically certified.

A Shift Away from Natural Cosmetics

Alongside the expansion into sustainable nutrition, Biofach will be streamlining its focus. The trade fair announced it will no longer host events related to natural cosmetics after 2027, allowing for a more concentrated emphasis on food. This decision follows the discontinuation of Vivaness, a parallel natural cosmetics trade fair, in 2024.

The move has already prompted some natural cosmetics companies to seek alternative platforms. Several manufacturers who previously exhibited at Vivaness are planning to participate in the inaugural “Natural Cosmetics Hub,” also taking place in Nuremberg concurrently with Biofach this year.

This strategic realignment underscores Biofach’s commitment to becoming a comprehensive hub for the future of food – one that embraces innovation, collaboration, and a shared vision for a more sustainable world.
