Valais Police Crack Down on Reckless Driving and Illegal Transport

Valais cantonal police have intensified enforcement efforts, resulting in the revocation of licenses for two drivers caught speeding excessively and a substantial fine levied against a driver engaged in cabotage – the illegal transport of passengers. The actions, taken since the beginning of 2026, underscore a commitment to road safety and regulatory compliance in the Swiss canton.

Increased Enforcement Targets Dangerous Behavior

In January, authorities conducted targeted checks that led to the apprehension of two motorists exhibiting dangerously high speeds. One driver was recorded traveling at 130 km/h in a 60 km/h zone between Chippis and Bramois, while another reached 151 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the Grand-Saint-Bernard road. Both individuals had their driving privileges immediately revoked and face prosecution in the courts.

“These incidents represent a serious threat to public safety,” a senior official stated. “The speeds involved demonstrate a blatant disregard for the law and the potential consequences of reckless driving.”

Combating Illegal Passenger Services

Beyond speeding violations, the Valais police also addressed the issue of illegal passenger transport. A foreign driver was found to be operating an unauthorized paid service between Verbier and Geneva airport. This practice, known as cabotage, undermines licensed transportation providers and can compromise passenger safety.

The driver received a “heavy fine” for the infraction, according to police reports. The specific amount of the fine was not disclosed.

Ongoing Commitment to Safety and Regulation

The Cantonal Police have affirmed their dedication to continuing these enforcement operations. These efforts aim to deter both road offenses and illegal transport activities, ensuring a safer and more regulated transportation environment for residents and visitors alike.

The police remind all drivers to adhere to speed limits and all transportation providers to operate within the bounds of the law. Continued vigilance and proactive enforcement are crucial to maintaining order and protecting the public.
