YouTube vs Reddit for AI Search: A Heyflow Experiment

YouTube Poised to Surpass Reddit as Key AI Search Resource, New Experiment Suggests

A growing body of evidence indicates YouTube is rapidly becoming a more influential source for AI search results than Reddit, prompting a new experiment to validate the shift. The findings, shared by a team investigating the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence-driven search, suggest a fundamental change in SEO strategy may be underway.

A company official stated, “We still see a lot of people chasing Reddit because the charts on LinkedIn show it’s heavily cited across AI Search.” However, recent observations reveal a different trend, particularly within Google’s AI Search interfaces – including AI Overviews and AI Mode – where YouTube consistently appears as a top cited domain.

This isn’t simply a matter of Google favoring its own platform, the official explained. “YouTube is a controlled third-party property. We don’t own the domain, but we control what goes on it, at least for our own channel. And video titles and descriptions offer plenty of room for optimization.” This control, coupled with the inherent richness of video content, positions YouTube as a powerful tool for capturing the attention of AI search algorithms.

Validating the YouTube Advantage: A Five-Step Experiment

To rigorously test this hypothesis, the team is conducting an AEO (AI Experimentation and Optimization) experiment with Heyflow, focusing on a five-step process:

  1. Prompt Tracking: Utilizing Peec AI, the team is identifying and tracking “meaningful prompts” – specific queries and topics relevant to Heyflow’s services, such as GDPR compliance.
  2. Citation Monitoring: The team is actively monitoring where YouTube videos are being cited in response to these prompts, focusing on Google’s AI interfaces and Perplexity. Initial data shows YouTube as the second most cited domain in their test set.
  3. Video-to-Prompt Matching: Rather than creating new content, the team is auditing Heyflow’s existing video library to identify videos that naturally address the tracked prompts.
  4. Title and Description Optimization: Existing videos are undergoing optimization, with titles made more contextual and incorporating relevant keywords – including translations like “DSGVO” (German for GDPR) – and descriptions enhanced with context, timestamps, and clear structure.
  5. Performance Monitoring: After optimizing 20 videos, the team is tracking citation pickups and brand mention impact using spot checks and Peec AI. Early results show optimized videos appearing prominently in AI Overviews.

Beyond Spam: A Sustainable AI Search Strategy

The team emphasizes a key distinction between genuine optimization and manipulative tactics. “Unlike Reddit spam – low-value comments just dropping brand names – optimizing a video’s metas for better discoverability generally aligns with what YouTube would want,” a company release stated. This suggests that optimizing for AI search on YouTube isn’t a short-term loophole, but a potentially sustainable strategy.

The experiment is currently in its early validation phase, but the initial results are promising. If successful over the next 1-2 weeks, the team has an AirOps workflow in place to scale the optimization process across Heyflow’s entire video library of over 100 videos.

The findings raise a critical question for content creators: Have you already begun optimizing your YouTube library for AI search?
