DUBAI, February 23, 2024 – Gold and silver futures stalled Friday as indirect talks between the U.S. and Iran concluded in Oman, leaving traders awaiting a reaction from Washington. IranS state media reported at 13:30 GMT that the discussions had ended “for now,” without providing further details.
Cautious Optimism, Lingering Disputes
Negotiations offer a glimmer of hope, but significant hurdles remain between the two nations.
- Indirect talks between the U.S. and Iran in Oman have concluded without a firm timeline for future discussions.
- Iran insists any negotiations must occur “without threats,” a response to recent U.S. military buildup in the Gulf.
- Gold and silver futures are currently in a holding pattern, awaiting a statement from the U.S. President.
- Disagreements persist over the scope of negotiations, with Iran focusing solely on the nuclear programme and the U.S. seeking a broader agreement.
These demands come after U.S. President Trump repeatedly threatened military action against Iran and ordered a buildup of U.S. forces in the Gulf region, raising fears of a potential confrontation.
Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi described the talks as “vrey serious,” stating on social media, “It was useful to clarify both Iranian and American thinking and identify areas for possible progress.” He added that Oman aims to reconvene discussions “in due course,” with the outcomes to be carefully considered in both Tehran and Washington, but did not specify a date.
despite the cautious optimism, significant disagreements remain. Iran maintains its right to enrich uranium on its own soil, limiting any potential agreement to the nuclear program and capping enriched uranium levels at 400 kilograms. The U.S., however, is pushing for a more thorough package addressing Iran’s missile program, energy exports to China, and its regional alliances – issues Iran considers outside the scope of discussion.
Gold futures are currently holding above the 9 EMA ($4,936) but remain below immediate resistance at $5,018, indicating strengthening momentum after a reversal above the 50 EMA ($4,590). As of this writing, gold futures are trading at $4,968, having tested a low of $4,671.74.

Silver futures have also found a reversal after testing support at the 100 EMA ($62.957), currently trading just above the 50 EMA ($74.775). However, the futures face potential resistance at the 20 EMA ($85.636) and the 9 EMA ($85.366).

The spot gold and silver ratio, after reaching a high of 72.77, is currently trading near its low at 64.51, supporting gains in gold and silver futures. Tho, analysts anticipate a potential reversal from these levels.
Looking ahead, a lack of immediate reaction from the U.S.President over the weekend could trigger a sell-off in gold and silver futures on Monday, as any statement – positive or negative – could introduce volatility into the market.
