Ahn Se-young’s ascent to the top of the badminton world continues, marked by a stunning 10-match winning streak against her Chinese rival, Wang Zhiyi, and a strategic avoidance by China’s team in recent competitions.
The contrast between the two players is stark. While Wang Zhiyi is celebrated as an unrivaled ace on the Chinese stage, receiving the nation’s highest achievement award for her performance at the China National Sports Festival, her international success is consistently overshadowed by the presence of Ahn Se-young. According to reports, Wang Zhiyi’s recent accolades are tempered by the reality of being consistently bested by the world’s number one player.
Despite possessing a complete skillset – quick footwork, powerful offense, and stable defense – Wang Zhiyi has been unable to overcome Ahn Se-young in official competition. Since last year, she has suffered 10 consecutive losses, including defeats in the finals of the Malaysia Open and India Open earlier this season. In the Malaysia Open, she nearly secured victory with a 17-9 lead in the second game, only to falter as Ahn Se-young elevated her game.

Analysis from Chinese media outlet ‘Sohu’ reveals a critical difference in mental fortitude, stating that Ahn Se-young’s probability of scoring after 19 points is 73%, while Wang Zhiyi’s is only 51%. This data suggests that Ahn Se-young consistently performs at her best during crucial moments, while Wang Zhiyi struggles under pressure.
Paradoxically, this consistent defeat positions Wang Zhiyi as the second-best player globally. As one analyst noted, “If Ahn Se-young hadn’t existed, Wang Zhiyi likely would have won all ten of those competitions.” However, with Ahn Se-young’s dominance becoming increasingly solidified, Wang Zhiyi’s opportunities for international glory may be limited to the Chinese circuit.
A generational shift is underway in Chinese badminton, with Wang Zhiyi emerging as a leading figure, even surpassing established star Chen Yufei. Yet, the pinnacle of the sport remains firmly in Ahn Se-young’s grasp. Demonstrating remarkable sportsmanship, Ahn Se-young expressed respect for Wang Zhiyi after the India Open, acknowledging her as a formidable competitor who “always thinks and prepares a lot.”
Currently, Ahn Se-young is leading the Korean women’s national team to success at the Asian Men’s and Women’s Team Badminton Championships in Qingdao, securing three consecutive wins in the group stage. Notably, China strategically excluded key players, including Wang Zhiyi and Chen Yufei, from this tournament, seemingly to avoid a direct confrontation with the Korean team led by Ahn Se-young.
